I haven't bought a license in 15 years since I have a life time so I don't know if they do here in Oklahoma or not.

Re: Hunting lic. question

Thats funny Strut....I emailed the PGC with a little complaining and to let them know that they will more than likely lose some hunters over this. I asked if it was "manatory" to give my SSN and if not, how do I go about getting a hunting lic. from vendors that think it is manatory?

Here is the reply I got back...

Hunting Licenses and Social Security Numbers

Federal Law: Over the past few years, U.S. Congress has enacted a number of new laws to improve enforcement of child support obligations. As part of a broad "welfare reform" effort, the U.S. Government has required the states to implement new requirements to encourage payment of child support. States that fail to implement these requirements face possible loss of federal welfare funds.

The "welfare reform" legislation contains hundreds of provisions. Out of this massive new law, a handful of new federal requirements affect purchasers and holders of recreational licenses, including hunting and fishing licenses. One provision requires states to deny hunting and fishing licenses to certain persons in arrears on child support when a court issues an order revoking or denying such licenses. Another requires government agencies to obtain Social Security numbers from applicants for recreational licenses, including hunting licenses.

Pennsylvania Law: In 1997, the Pennsylvania General Assembly considered comprehensive legislation to implement the new federal requirements at the state level. Act 1997-58 was signed into law on December 16, 1997 and took effect January 1, 1998. This law addresses hundreds of issues; as with the federal law, a couple of provisions affect hunting license buyers.

Section 2 of the Act amends 23 Pa.C.S. §4304.1 to require the Social Security numbers of applicants for various licenses, including hunting licenses. Section 9 of the Act amends 23 Pa.C.S. §4355 to provide for the denial or suspension of hunting licenses of persons three or more months in arrears on child support. The hunting privileges of such persons are suspended or denied only when a court issues an order requiring such action.

If you have further questions, please contact the Bureau of Law Enforcement at (717) 783-6526. Offices are open Monday through Friday (except on State Holidays) 7:45 a.m. to 4:00 p.m

Re: Hunting lic. question

If it came down to giving them my SS# and then go hunting, or just go home, I would give them my SS#.

IF that is the only reason they want your SS#, then I am glad to see them help out with cracking down on dead beat dads. More power to them. If it helps poor, defenseless children who are going hungry frown.gif cause good ole' dad "can't afford" to send child support check mad.gif, then help them out by all means. Come on guys, you would be helping a good cause. confused.gif

Re: Hunting lic. question

I don't think NY asks for it. I get mine at Walmart or a hunting store and they'll usually look at the previous year's license.Ohiobucks has a point and if you consider all things, this is what the world is coming to...a sign of the times. For pete's sake NY has to legalize rifles now...why can't anyone be happy hunting with a shotgun or anything at all!? Sorry, I got onto another soapbox, lol

Thats true Tom, but your SS# is also sitting in a book in the store you bought the license for any employee to come look at....or anybody else that can get ahold of it for that matter. I used to work at a store that sells hunting licenses, and I can think of a few people that I would NOT want to get ahold of my SS#.

If I knew 100% that the information wouldn't fall into the wrong hands and it was "only" being used to catch dead beat dads/moms...so be it. I have no children so not real concerned with that part of it.

The prob. I have is...1st and foremost, your SSN is your identity. In the wrong hands, someone could use it to totally ruin your life. 2nd, when SS was thought up (don't think its a good program anyway) you individaul number was never intended to be used as a form of idenity. 3rd, why would anyone want their game comm. or whoever is in charge of hunting lic. sales also to be involved with politics anymore than they already are???

Next to my wife, family, friends, dogs...hunting is the next love of my life. If your comfortable giving out personal info....go ahead....I just may give up hunting because of this! smirk.giffrown.gif

Re: Hunting lic. question

I have e-mailed the Game Commission, called Sen. Santorum's office, Sen, Murtha's office and Rep. White's office. I suggest anyone else who is disturbed by this discriminitory invasion of privacy and identity safety do likewise.

I'm good and P-O'ed and don't care who knows it!! mad.gif

Re: Hunting lic. question

I wonder how much info. goes along with your driver lic. number? I know in PA...our driver lic. has a magnetic strip on the back for a police officer to swipe through a computer in their car.

A friend of mine got a speeding ticket two weeks ago in Ohio on his way back from a fishing trip at Lake Erie. Anyways, he said they mailed him the ticket and his SSN was on it?????????? Last time I checked...my SSN isn't on my lic., so where did they get that info.? confused.gif
