Bowhunting for Flying Fish

Spent an hour this past Sunday with a buddy bowhunting for flying fish. The fish are big mouth carp that reach about 30 pounds regularly. They're a super invasive species that states are trying to rid themselves of. The fish are easily startled by the sound of a boat motor so what you do is find a school and troll around them till they begin jumping. We had several that jumped right in to the boat.

The arrow is passing just below this fish.

These are couple that we snagged before we headed back to shore.

We did center punch one with the bow and had several that the arrow just glanced off of. The video is outstanding.

Re: Bowhunting for Flying Fish

I started bowfishing for carp (common carp) this year but they stay in the water while I am shooting at them. Shooting at them flying fish really looks challenging and fun. I need to go try that some day.

Re: Bowhunting for Flying Fish

These fish are Asian big head, not big mouth carp as I called them earlier. Yes Tom, these are the fish that they're trying to keep out of the Great Lakes. We were on the Illinois River outside of Peoria, near I-74. I hope to have some better pix after I go back there for another trip this weekend.
