Rut-Nut
I will be going on my first caribou hunt in Sept. and have a few questions specific to bowhunting. From what I'm told, the caribou are usually in constant motion. The only time they stop is to shake themselves off, after a water crossing. My questions are as follows: A) do you try to stop a caribou for a shot like you would a whitetail? I usually whistle or grunt to try to stop a buck so I get a good still shot. Or do you try to take them on the move? If so, how do you time it so when you shoot the front leg is extended infront of the animal and not to the rear blocking the vitals? And is there any way to practice this type of shot? I may set up at a crossing and try to get one when it stops to shake off, but if I do a spot and stalk, or try to go after one and cut it off somewhere, I would like to know any "tricks" or advice that may help. ANy help would be greatly appreciated!!!!
AJ
Re: ANybody have experience bowhunting Caribou? If you need something to get you pumped to go, check out Realtree's Monster Bulls video on DVD. Oh my, they do stick some nice caribou on there. While I have not personally hunted them, I have watched many of the videos and spoke with other hunters. I have seen archers try to stop them with grunts and noises, but they just ignore them pretty much. Most shots are taken while walking. As far as when to shoot, it depends on a few things. The arrow speed, the distance to the animal, and the animal speed. Maybe you will need the close leg to be back when you shoot, maybe you will need it forward, it depends on the shot.
