Bow hunting Basics?

Recommended Posts

You obviously will need a bow, so the very fundamental basic is ... Go to a reputable pro shop.

Avoid the big box or mail order stuff when you start out. Get to a good pro shop and start asking questions. Any good pro shop will take the time to go through the basics of archery with you. They will let you shoot about any bow they have, from the low end to the high end. If it is a good pro shop, they will not try to push the high end stuff at a new comer and they will set you up with a low end package deal. Low end is by no means poor quality. Anymore, even the low end bows can out shoot most archers and are capable of taking any game animal in North America. Get set up with a bow, a half dozen arrows, and a release and you should be good to go. Don't be afraid to go to more than one shop too. In fact you should before you lay down the cash.

After the bow, arrows, and release then you can focus on other items.

Clothes - your basic camo pants and jacket should do just fine.

Boots - a good pair of leather boots, rubber boots are better in most opinions, but not necessary.

Stand - you can build stands or buy commercial stands pretty reasonably any more. Or you can just hunt from the ground at essentially no cost.

Optics - binos are a life saver and a range finder will be your best friend, but gain, these are not part of the basics, IMO.

Outside of that, everything else just become more things to assist in the hunt. You can bow hunt as inexpesive as you want or as elaborate as you want. It depends on your budget and desires.

Start at a pro shop and get the basics ... bow, arrows, and release. Then just go out and shoot, shoot, shoot, and keep shooting. (Oh yea, you'll need a target too) The most important thing is to have fun and be safe.

Re: Bow hunting Basics?

Welcome Painkiller, where in Mi. are you from ?

I'm from Grayling. I agree a 100% that you need some help to find a bow and get setup. Do you have any hunting friends ? Find a bow, get it setup right, and shoot alot till you feel comfortable with it. We will help with your questions whenever you ask cool.gif

I would also put this post in the bowhunting room.

Welcome to the Realtree forum Painkiller.

To start out hunting on the ground, you might want to get yourself a little stool to sit on. This is the one I have and find it great. The nice thing about 3-legged chairs is that you don't need perfectly level ground to set them up on like you would a 4-legged stool.

Just something to think about. wink.gif
