oo_buck
Re: fall seasion???? Well, I've never hunted turkey in the fall. I'm not all that cracked on the idea of a fall season.... I'll explain why here. As for Archery in the fall, I have no problem. I will deer hunt as normal, and if a shot on a turkey presents itself..... I'll take it. This is how I imagine most archery hunting for turkeys will happen. As for Shotgun season in the fall, I have a problem. I absolutely hate the idea of guys with shotguns stomping through while I'm still bowhunting deer. And I'm sure now that I'll be required by law to wear hunter orange a full month before the previous seasons..... Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that shotgun hunting for turkey or deer is bad... I do both and thoroughly enjoy it. I mean the main reason I got into bowhunting was because of the lower hunting pressure on the deer in my area.... Maybe I'm over reacting. Time will tell...... Turkeygirl
Re: fall seasion???? Gfour --- Hunting fall turkeys is a little different from spring in that the turkeys are in flocks and if you spook a flock, you will want to sit down in the area and call as they will try to regroup. I've been bowhunting deer during NY's fall season and heard turkeys roost then would go outi n them orning after the turkeys. I didn't have luck but bow season during turkey season is a good way to "kills 2 birds with one stone".

Squirrelhunter91
Re: fall seasion???? I Fall Turkey Hunt each year and have fun all the time. Every turkey season I've hunted, somebody in our group has always shot and missed a bird. Just our luck. Our time will come though.

Guest ronin
Re: fall seasion???? We have a nice fall season in California and absolutely no shortage of turkey. The rios I hunt in the fall will come to quiet calls when the flock has been busted up. This can be accomplished a couple of ways: Find a flock and run through them screaming and throwing your arms up in the air. Or let your dog do it. Persoanlly, I let my bird hunting basenji find and bust the flock as we are out for a nice morning walk. I come back an hour or so later without axel but with my bow or shotgun to the same general vicinity and call softly every 15 minutes or so. Seems to work great for me. The other method I use is to find the flock and determine their direction of travel then ambush 'em. This is sneaky but very fun!.
slaw
Re: fall seasion???? I love fall turkey hunting. it's different. the assembly call(long series of drawn out yelps) has drawn a whole flock of em in, 3 years in a row for me. Guest Blaine_Cardilli
Re: fall seasion???? Maine's fall turkey season is archery only, too, and is in Oct. Some deer hunters will likely get some while on stand but the diehard turkey hunter needs to get out there after 'em. The "scatter" method is most talked about but tough to do successfully. I'd scout hard pre-season, find a roost tree, (or wicked close, like in spring), and simply set up in some type of ambush position along what you know is a used trail and wait. A decoy or two, (hens work best for me), and some very very light calls might do the trick. Calls used: kee-kee, (or "whistle" call of young birds), clucks, and purrs. Scratch the leaves to mimic feeding, too. I stalked a flock last season for well over an hour and finally got within 20 yards of a fat jake, inside the woods, on a stone wall. Shot deflected off some brush and smashed into the stones at his feet. Game over! If anyone gets the Northwoods Sporting Journal, (New England publication but available in 48 states), check out the upcoming August issue. I have a feature in it on fall hunting. -Blaine
