Guest Bowhunter2114
When to put it out? How far from stand location? I don't want to scare them off when walking in... Give me some info on the stuff. I had a gift certificate to sports athority and this was about the only thing that stuck out
VTbowman
Re: Deer Cane I used it when I lived in LA and it draws the deer in fairly well. Its best to use it around a water source IMO, thats what I did. I hunted 10 yards away from a water hole and put this stuff like 20 feet away from the water edge about 20 yards away from my stand and they deer trampled it to death and dug a hole. Although they never seemed to go to it while I was on stand but the tracks do not lie. Nor did the hole they ate out of the dirt. I feel my stand was just not positioned right as I look back on my set up 12 years later... LOL
Huntr104
Re: Deer Cane I used it years ago. I put a alot down in the spring time. I was upset that the deer were not hitting it at all come hunting season. BUT. The next spring I checked on it during my spring scouting and they were going crazy with the stuff. They ate the dirt and had dug a hole about 6 inches deep and about 10 feet around. It does work. The problem that I had was that there were huge rock forms under the dirt. I guess it took a long time to get diluted enough for them. Give it a try but don't put too much out there.
billygoat
Re: Deer Cane Like Huntr 104 said... the stuff DOES work... I'll get some pics of a spot that the leasors before me, put some out... quite the hole! I put out a few more sites and would expect them to be going hard in the fall or next year early spring. As someone else mentioned, keep it near a water source.
JimT
Re: Deer Cane It does work, But I have read several articles that stated the deer tend to hit it more in the spring/summer rather than in the fall. I have a lick out back using whitetail addiction that is getting hit often...fwiw.
Guest Finn
Re: Deer Cane I haven't used it but use a different mineral recipe for a lick. Wouldn't recommend minerals for hunting over. Deer generally don't seek them during the fall and hunting seasons.
Rhino
Re: Deer Cane We've tried them all on our club and like Finn said deer don't seek them out during the fall. They are mainly utilized during the warmer months so at least where I've hunted I wouldn't recommend them for hunting over either. With that said, in addition to providing a mineral supplement for a healthier deer herd, they can be a great tool for scouting the quality of your deer with trail cameras before the season opens. It's not really necessary to put them near your stands because deer will seek them out during the warmer months anyway. Just my opinion but putting one out for about ever 160 acres you have and scattering them around may get you some trail cam pics of a shooter buck or two that you want to focus your attention toward hunting when the season begins. He'll sure be in the general area when your hunting season begins but should be on a normal fall pattern for your area instead of going to a mineral lick. wtnhunt
Re: Deer Cane Best time to establish a site is the spring, but you can put it out now. Our mineral sites are located near well used trails near the edge of woods and fields. They get used quite well. Have used deer cain before and had pretty good results with it. christsavedme
Re: Deer Cane We have several spots out on our land. We started the licks last fall and got minimal response on them at that time.....Now that spring has come and gone and summer is in full swing the deer are hammering them. I will post some pics of the licks soon. It is pretty amazing what they have done to them over the last couple of months. We set up one of our game cams on one of them about a week ago and hope we will get some pics from it. Will post them when we get them! brad dryden
Re: Deer Cane It works well I belive but salt blocks work well to for them or just take table salt and that works good to.
