Canadian_Goose
One of my friends has a .308 norma (not northern ) mag he doesn't want. Anyone heard of these and how do they perform? specifically with a lower grain 150 - 160.
AJ
Re: .308 Northern Mag Well, since I have never heard of a northern mag, I suspect you are talking about a .308 Norma Mag. It is a good cartridge. There is not a large selection of factory ammo, but the handloader can make the gun do just about anything the .300 Win Mag will. I think Norma is the only producer of factory ammo. This is not a bad thing as they make outstanding ammo. The cartridge is basically a .338 Win Mag necked down to .30 caliber. It has slightly less powder capacity than the .300 Win Mag, but it has a longer neck. It will do a better job with heavier (longer) bullets than the .300 Win Mag and definately better than the short mags. Feed this thing some 180 or 200 gr bullets and it comes into its own. It would have a good home in Thompson.

spyderpancake
Re: .308 Norma Mag I just got a Norma this month. It is a 03-A3 Springfield that was rechambered. It is a beautiful rifle, somebody put a lot of work into it, i will have to post a pic of it. Like AJ said, you can form brass from .338 Win Mag or a 7mm Mag. What kind of rifle is it? Just a heads up, this round packs a good bit of recoil, especially if it is a light gun(like mine), so if you don't like magnums then this ain't for you unless you load it down or it has a muzzle brake. The kick is about like a .300 Mag.
spyderpancake
Re: .308 Norma Mag because it is a completely different round. There is a lot of difference in performance and selection in .308 and .338 bullets. That is like saying why get a .243 or 7mm-08 when you can get a .308 Win. because they are based on the same case. AJ
Re: .308 Norma Mag Handloaders can make 308 Norma Mag brass from these: 257 Weatherby Mag 264 Win Mag 7mm Rem Mag 7mm Weatherby Mag 300 Win Mag 338 Win Mag, 358 Norma Mag 458 Win Mag Each will require at least some trimming and possibly steps to neck up or down along with annealing.
