Re: Fly Fishing help

what do you mean by set? if you want to tie flies then you need a vice, material, hooks, glue, and such. for a rod and reel you dont have to get real fancy. my rod was expensive but my reel was only like 8$ or something like that. but it still caught me 81 trout last weekend. so you dont have to get too fancy. for flies you need to find out what kind of bugs you have in your area. other than that i dont know what else you need.

Re: Fly Fishing help

I'll try to help ya out. First get you a pole and reel that your comfortable with but is the right size for the streams you'll be fishin. It doesn't have to be anything expensive, especially since your just starting out. I like an 8ft 5 weight for around here. Next, ask around for some good patterns and get a good supply of flies. A local outfitter should be able to help you. A good line to start with is a weight forward line. This will help you in casting. I like a braided leader conector verses an eyelet. Those are hard to get in. Then chose a leader. It should be as long as your pole, maybe a little shorter to start with till you get your casting down. After a while you be taking tying lessons grin.gif WARNING: FLY FISHING IS VERY ADDICTIVE!!!!! Hope this helps. Just email me if ya have any ?

Re: Fly Fishing help

Thanks Flyrod. Yeah it is addictive. I never did it before unitl a month or so ago. Now I am ready to do it alone but I am not sure how I start off. I guess the best thing would be to get a book on it. It's definatley more complicated than regular fishing.

I mean obviously I need a Rod and Reel. I guess I need a leader as well...but everything after that I am pretty much lost on. I think I will get a book. It's probably a lot easier than this grin.gif

Re: Fly Fishing help

K.I.S.S. flyfishing can be SUPER confusing so keep it simple starting out......you'll enjoy it a whole lot more. As time goes on then you can see how involved you want to get with it.

A book is good, but for casting help a video is better, and a day spent on a good instructer is priceless, rod reel and a floatingweight forward fly line, leader is needed but if you are just starting out you can get away with just a one size leader. Learn leader formulas as you get more and more into it. Depending on what your fishing for a good start would be a selection of wolly buggers and some small poppers or dry flies. That small combo will cover most trout and bass fishing.
