RIP - Chevy Shortbox

Well had a good weekend of waterfowl hunting. My shooting zoned in again. Some nice birds in the area. Good looking ducks coming through. But that's besides the fact.

We were scouting Sunday night for some geese. I was driving my friends truck and shut the truck off to listen to the species of geese that was overhead.

I was unaware that the starter was acting up and that it had a hard time starting when everything was warmed up. Well, it didn't start. We spent about 20 mins tapping and trying to start the vehicle. I just rolled out from underneath with the tire iron and I saw smoke coming from the hood. Then and orange glow on the ground. The truck was on FIRE! We quickly unloaded the brand new quad out of the back and the spare rounds from the front seat and got out of the way.

It was crazy how fast things happened. Cell phone reception was terrible so 911 gave the fire department incorrect directions. By the time they finally found us, the truck had blown two front tires, cab had blown and the gas had lit on fire(full tank). Everything was burned. Only thing left was metal pieces. It was so hot that it melted the aluminum valve covers and everything. Unreal!

It was a 1989 silverado shortbox in great shape. I was always asking him when he was going to sell it to me. I guess insurance owns it now. I hope he gets a good deal for it.

I feel bad, but he kept telling me it was alright. I can't believe how fast everything happened and how big the fire became! crazy.gifcrazy.gif

Holy crap man! It's a good thing you got out from underneath and had time to get all that stuff out. I wouldn't have wanted to be there if that ammo started going off!

I guess you can't tell what happened if it's totally burnt.

I've always heard that vehicles can go up in flames remarkably fast.

Your story reminds me of a time when I was at the U of W. One of my buddies came into class late and looking all flustered. During a break I asked him what happened.

He said he was sitting at a light on Route 90 when a guy beside him starting motioning for him to roll down his window. When he did, the guy yelled at him that his car was on fire. He looked down and saw flames shooting out from underneath. It was winter so he drove it off into the snow but it didn't help too much and it was still a write-off.

Good to hear you are both ok and he isn't upset about the truck. Heck, that's what insurance is for!
