Canadian Geese Limit Reduced

I haven't seen the actual book yet for the year, but apparently the limit for canadian geese for non-residents has been reduced from 5 to 3 in zones 25, and 25A. That's North and South of Arborg. Man that bites.

Don't know if any of you all hunt here, but Clayman, you may want to check your zone out west there!

Re: Canadian Geese Limit Reduced

I find it funny that they have reduced the limits for Non-Residents only. Speaks volumes for the number of Canadian hunters left. Basically, when you break it down, there are more guys vacationing and hunting from the states up here, than there are local hunters.

I have noticed a difference, even since I started. There are just less and less local hunters.

Thanks for checking that for us rbduck!

Re: Canadian Geese Limit Reduced

I just got back online after being away for a week or R-n-R...

Thanks for the update Palssonator. I hunt in GHA 28 and if we go into the Turtle Mtns I think we're in 29 (but we've only done that a couple of times in the last 20 years).

2004 was by far our best year on Canada geese. I don't recall our numbers now, but we did really well in the week that we were there. Normally there aren't many Canada geese in that area - almost entirely snows.

I know that we didn't take a posession limit home with us.

Even in the area where we hunt, we see fewer local hunters every year.

Without knowing the specifics of why the difference for non-resident hunters, I can't really say that I think it's good or bad. Obviously, the conservation department thinks that non-residents are having an impact on the resource in that part of the province.

Even if they expanded it to where I hunt, I'd still come back. I have too much fun and have too many good local friends there to stay away.

Re: Canadian Geese Limit Reduced

Palssonator, I got home yesterday to find the 2005 Manitoba Regs in my mailbox. I didn't see any changes that really effect me. The only thing that I don't like is that all day goose hunting doesn't start until October 15th. (We are planning on being there Oct 7-15) Normally it switches to all day the weekend of your Canadian Thanksgiving, but this year it switches from mornings only to all day on the 15th. We've been there before when that has happened, it's just hard to be hunting ducks in the afternoon and have a low flying flock of geese come over and there's nothing you can do but watch 'em.

My dad got a call from the guy who owns the cabin where we stay. He said that they got so much rain there that Whitewater lake is extremely high this year. He said the lake water is two inches under the floor of the cabin, and the front deck is more of a "dock". He couldn't drive into the cabin and had to take a quad instead to check on the place. If the water doesn't recede we may have to set up camp in his brother's shop just a half mile up the road.

Re: Canadian Geese Limit Reduced

We have a cabin right near Winnipegosis, MB, just south of the Turtle Mountains. Its right on Lake Winnipegosis and we are usually there around thanksgiving(not this year cause of work and wedding), but it was really above normal levels last time we were there. Duck hunting last year was up to the top of my waders. I might be S O L this year. Or need to find a shallow hay field.

I know that area has gotten a lot. The Interlake was lucky. They had enough drying time to get the majority of the crops in and are fully seeded and ready for the season. I can't wait. Seems like it is going to be a great year.

I will have to get a copy of the regs tomorrow. I am going to go for a round of 5 stand at the clay range. They usually have some copies there.

I'm confused, is there more than one set of Turtle Mountains in Manitoba? I know of the Turtle Mountians on the North Dakota/Manitoba border, but I've never heard of the Turtle Mountains near Lake Winnipegosis??
