Guest littlebighorn
my stand is at the edge of a bean feild all the way to the back.and the only way to get there is to go right through the field.what would be the best way to do it with runing all the deer off in the moring and not leaving to much scent at night???? Tominator
Re: best way to get to stand Don't hunt the morning. Watch the wind as you approach in the evening, if the wind's not right, don't hunt that stand. The above statements are intended if you're a trophy hunter. A lot depends on your area. Deer around here are used to being harassed by humans and they smell humans all the time. If you hunt for meat, you stand a decent chance to take something if your deer are like the deer around me. I've had plenty of does fawns and small bucks walk right on the path I walked in on. Occasionally a big buck will do that too. On some of the land I hunt, I don't worry about the wind at all, and it's nearly impossible to avoid some deer winding you in any wind situation. The only other solution I see is to talk to the neighbors to see if you can gain access through their property.
SaskMan
Re: best way to get to stand I wouldn't hunt it in the morning either. After you're done at night take the long way out. I have a stand like the one mentioned. I never hunt it in the a.m and when done in the evening, I go out through the woods, away from the stand, go 1/2 mile along a river then back arounf the field the deer are in. Taking the time to get out right will allow you to see more deer.
JoshM
Re: best way to get to stand Go around....Might take longer....Or move your stand
JimT
Re: best way to get to stand Get in there early in the afternoons for sure....Maybe an hour before you normally would hunt. Thats what I would do. I would consider putting a stand down a well used trail that leads from the field for the mornings..

Rhino
Re: best way to get to stand I agree with Tominator and Saskman, Since you're hunting the edge of the field don't try to hunt it in the morning if you're going to run deer out of there. Also do everything you can to reduce your scent including wearing rubber boots and try not to touch anything with your bare hands if you can help it. After an afternoon hunt figure out a way to walk out around the field to keep from spooking any deer out there but don't walk near the edge of where you're seeing most of the deer enter the field. It may be 3 times the distance to walk but a small sacrifice to make compared to the amount of time you intend on hunting. The bottom line is be as sneaky as possible. I had a similar problem on a piece of property I hunted in Iowa. In this case though, I was hunting a wood lot bordering a field in the morning and afternoon. Instead of busting deer out of the field bordering the wood lot I was hunting, I came in from a different area and crossed 2 fences and 2 small creeks to get to a CRP tract that allowed me to enter the wood lot without ever setting foot on the field bordering the wood lot. It was all part of the same leased property. I left the same way. I also had another stand on the opposite end of the woodlot and I used a creek bottom and topography to hide my movement getting to and from that stand. It took me a lot longer to get to and from my stands than just walking through the field but I didn't bust deer out of that field getting to and from my stands either. wtnhunt
Re: best way to get to stand Have to agree with what is said above. Sounds like a great afternoon setup. Another option is to have someone drop you in really really early. Use a 4 wheeler to get as close as possible and them ride back out. Guest deldeer
Re: best way to get to stand i have the same problem....but i have to hunt when i can....so the morning/evening thing does'nt work for me. also for me to walk around, i walk by 3 other guys stands. the deer here on the east coast find it very hard to go somewhere & not have some kind of human contact..& i have found out (here anyways), that i can bust them out of the field in the morning, & they don't seem to run far at all..as a matter of fact, some just hunker down & let you go by. i think they don't think you can see them.. just don't stop & look at them, keep going.... seems that when you stop, they get antsy & take off. i know it sounds crazy but it works!!!! & have taken some really nice bucks like this. remember this is all done in the dark too..... GWSmith
Re: best way to get to stand If you have to hunt in the mornings...get there a couple hours early at least! I like JimT's method the best though...hunt a trail leading towards the bedding area that will get the traffic of the deer leaving the field instead of hunting the field! Just setup one morning and watch where they leave the field and readjust your stand accordingly!
