Rifle Suggestions!

Re: Rifle Suggestions!

Like Jim and wtnhunt mentioned, there are a lot of good quality guns out there. A few you should look at are the Charles Daly Mauser, Remington 700, Winchester 70, Savage line, Browning A-Bolt, Weatherby, Howa 1500, Ruger 77, Kimber, and probably some others I forgot.

As to what chambering you want, its all up to you. A .270 Win or a .30-06 will perform just like your .280 Rem. you can go to larger chamberings like the .35 Whelen, .338/06 A-Square, or smaller calibers like the .260 Rem, 7-08 Rem. Each of these will kill a deer the same out to 300 yards. Some have lighter recoil than others. Some shoot slightly flatter than the others (not much), but realistically on deer sized game, the only real difference is how much recoil the shooter gets. Check out the Cartridge Comparison at the top of the rifle section.

Re: Rifle Suggestions!

I would get a good 30 cal Savage or Remington. Lots to choose from, but the one gun I want now is a Savage 116 Weather Warrier. I just bought a Remington 7600 in .308 that I think you would enjoy also. Your .280 is the near perfect deer gun. It will be hard to have better results than your getting now.

Re: Rifle Suggestions!

Personally I really like the 30-06. If i had to choose one caliber and that is all i could shoot it would be the .30. You can find shells from 130/140 grain area all the way up to 220 grain. It is just a great all around gun. I know AJ a well placed shot from any gun will kill them just as dead and I agree with that theory but with the variety of grain shell you can shoot groundhogs to elk.

Re: Rifle Suggestions!

preacherman-----You 280 has you covered all the way to elk. If you want a varmit gun---I would think along the lines of a 17 HMR. Or maybe a big-bore Marlin---like the 45/70 or 444. Something different & a blast to shoot. It would be great for bear or boar hunting.

A 270 or 30/06 is the same as you have now.

I reread your additional post----deer rifle----then I would get the 444 Marlin or a 336 in 35 Remington.

Re: Rifle Suggestions!

I agree with JimT. I bought the Savage Weather Warrior in 300 RUM. The cartridge isn't necessary for most but the gun is my point. It is an excellent shooter straight out of the box. The first three shots at 100 yards were all just about in the same hole. I had to walk up to the target to see the clover- leaf it was that tight. The accu-trigger is a huge factor in that, IMO.

I have a new Browning A-bolt also but the Savage has an edge in accuracy.

My buddy just bought a Winchester Model 70 Classic Sporter LT in 7mm STW. I've never been a big fan of Winchesters but this gun is a tack driver. Mild recoil for such a massive cartridge, also.

The bottom line for me, however, is quality coupled with value. By far, my Savage rifles have been the least expensive of everything I own. They have also turned out to be the most accurate. Savage synthetic stocks are not really that nice. Cheek to stock weld is fine but the stock looks kind of cheap to me. Minor issue in the total scheme of things.

Re: Rifle Suggestions!

I'm thinking hard on a Remington chambered in .260 for my next deer rifle purchase. The .260 chambering really hasn't caught on they way I think it should have, but the way I see things, it should be an incredible deer round. There are many rifles to choose from and many calibers as well, do some research before you make up your mind. You've got a long action, maybe it is time for a short? Maybe you would like a pump or a semi, there are tons of options, don't jump in head first. That is the best advice I can give you. IMHO

Re: Rifle Suggestions!

yeah, i don't know why the .260 isn't more popular than it is, it is a great deer round. Very low recoil, very good bullets, i am going to get one on a Rem 700 one of these days. Preacherman, I would look at a Rem 700, Savage, or Win.70, or if you are on a tight budget, i have heard that the Stevens(made by Savage) is a great shooter, for under or just at $300 if i am not mistaken.

I am going to use it as another deer rifle..........just wondering what is a good caliber to use. would you buy a .270 or a 30/06 or what? I looked at the remington model 700 and really liked it!

[/ QUOTE ]

Been hunting deer with my model 700 chambered in .270 for about 10 years now. Been very happy with it. I would like to have a 30 .06 and a BAR in that caliber will be my next rifle purchase, but the .270 is a great deer round, and I will still continue to hunt with it.

Re: Rifle Suggestions!

Look at ruger too. Bought a ruger in .260 for my daughter and I really like it. In fact I want to try it on deer myself. My savage is VERY accurate, as are my remingtons but that ruger holds it's own for sure. It's a matter of taste. I went to the ruger because It looked and felt better than the youth 700 in .260. I believe ruger comes with scope rings. Both of mine did.

Good luck.

Re: Rifle Suggestions!

I would suggest a 270 WSM no matter what brand.I have been wanting one for a while, and I might just be able to get one.I currently shoot a .30-06,but the 270 WSM is so much faster, flatter shooting, and harder hitting. All from a lighter bullet.WalMart price is usually $150-200 less than suggested prices. wink.gif If you see one you like go to wally worlds website, and look in special order guns. You may be suprised how good of a deal you can get!

Here are some links with popular brands.

Remington 700 XCR It's the new kid on the block.I just saw this design a few days ago...Awesome with grips like the winchester.

http://www.remington.com/firearms/centerfire/700xcr.htm

Winchester model 70.This is the ultimate, but the regular shadow can be bought at walmart w/ a 3-9x40 simmons scope for under $400!You can get it in camo too!(not for under $400 though) wink.gif

http://www.winchesterguns.com/prodinfo/catalog/detail.asp?cat_id=535&type_id=929&cat=001C

Savages are overlooked alot.I have one in .30-06,and it has never let me down.It gets 1" patterns at 100yds with 150gr winchester ballistic silvertips.(With me shooting! laugh.gif)Not to mention they now have an accu-trigger that you can adjust the pull on.

http://www.savagearms.com/11g.htm

Finally the popular Browning, but I have heard they don't shoot as accurate as the savage or winchester(I haven't heard anything about the remington yet,but it's a model 700 so you know it's good!).They have a 23" barrel instead of a 24" barrel. That may be the difference.

http://www.browning.com/products/catalog...amp;type_id=013

Out of these four I am hung up between the savage(for price, and accu-trigger),and winchester(For the grip),but you really can't lose with any of these. All these guns come in a variety of barrel types, and stock finishes.Hope I helped.

Re: Rifle Suggestions!

Don't forget to look at used rifles. LOTS of bargains out there for rifles that still have lifetimes of use left. And you can get rifles that are no longer available like the Savage 99s grin.gif and Winchester 88s.

Bolt action bargains can be had by buying the post 64/ pre classic winchester model 70 bolt guns. They still work great but do not have the premium tacked on for the CRF pre 64s & classics. I have seen usable Sagage bolt actions on used gun racks for as little as $150!

Winchester & MArlin lever actions can be found used around here for $150-$200.

Many of these used guns can be bought for a song .

I'd rather buy a used gun today than one that is factory new. Current guns seem to be rushed through today & quality is more spotty than in years past. Not that you can't get outstandingly accurate & reliable rifles today.......but it just seems that the odds are higher for getting a current production lemon.

Re: Rifle Suggestions!

I didn't say they weren't accurate.I said that I heard they werent as accurate.They have a 23" barrel instead of a 24" barrel.That may be the difference.

[ QUOTE ]

a longer barrel is generally better in terms of practical accuracy because a longer and therefore heavier barrel (within reason) is easier to hold relatively steady from unsupported positions; thus it is easier to shoot a long barreled rifle accurately.

The length of the rifle barrel has a direct influence on the velocity obtained from the cartridge for which it is chambered. Ballistically, longer is usually better. But for carrying, handling, and maneuvering in close quarters (like thick brush) shorter is usually better.

[/ QUOTE ]

[ QUOTE ]

For this reason, many magnum rifles now come with 24 inch barrels, which sacrifice some of the magnum's velocity. 24 inches is about the minimum barrel length practical for most magnum cartridges.

[/ QUOTE ]

[ QUOTE ]

The typical barrel length for a repeating hunting rifle chambered for standard high intensity cartridges, like the .243, .270, .308, or .30-06, is 22-24 inches, with 22 inches being the more common length today.

[/ QUOTE ]

I'm also talking 270wsm,not 270.Anyways Magnums need longer barrels. The Short mag is hotter, and needs a longer barrel to help burn the charge. The 270WSM responds better to longer barrels, such as muzzleloaders with 150gr of pyrodex tend to like longer barrels. My uncle has a regular 270 browning, and he is getting the same resluts as you,but with winchester 130gr ballistic sivertips. Also,As I previously stated any of these guns are fine, and won't be a disappointment. wink.gif
