Caribou hunting???

Just wondering how many of guys/gals have been caribou hunting. I've been watching a few hunts on OC and even though the terrain looks pretty tough the hunting itself doesn't seem too tough. I was watching (I think Archer's Choice) and this long line of Caribou walks single file by Ralph--one stops--looks at him--then keeps walking. It's like they were not scared human presence.

Is it really that easy or does the television just make it look that easy?

thanks

Re: Caribou hunting???

You're right AJ, they might not see many people in their entire lives.

They say that Caribou hunting is a good way to start big game hunting. They are relatively easy to hunt and you can see them coming from a mile away in those big herds. All that time watching them come in gives you time to get over the jitter's of taking your first big game animal. I've heard that their eyesight isn't all that good either. I remember watching a show where a guy walked right up to a big bull caribou with his arms stretched out above his head acting like another bull. I couldn't believe how close he got.

dogdoc!

Been there and done that. Caribou hunts vary greatly depending on whre you go (Alaska, Quebec, Northwest terr.). I went to Quebec with the intention of archery. I took a gun just in case.

When we flew in we only saw a few caribou from the plane. The sign (left by the last hunters) stated: "if you see one, shoot him!" They were right!!!! The migration in those areas can be very spotty. You may have 1000 come by you in a day or you may only see 5 animals all day from a distance. In our case (8 of us) we really had to hunt them. No complaints here, cuz that's what hunting is about. Wouldn't be a sport if it was easy. I walked 10 - 15 miles per day in search of a good boo. I ended up shooting 1 boo with the gun. Never had a chance with the bow or even came close to one. It was great terriotry to see if you have never seen the tundra. The other seven guys all shot 2 boo each. I chose only 1 because the racks didn't meet my expectations.

Don't believe all caribou hunting is as easy as they show on TV.

If you need further information send me a PM on this site and I will be more then happy to give you my telephone #. With the cost at $4,000.00 it will pay to shop around for what's out there.

You can say that again!

I'm going to N. Quebec in Sept. Taking the bow- hopefully I don;t need it, but taking the gun as back-up.

My buddy went last year and said it was REAL tough. Just not many Caribou arouind his camp. It was real warm for an extended time and all the caribou were hold up at the first camp. Those guys had a blast(no pun intended). They were all tagged out by Tuesday. By Wed, they started flying guys in to that camp (from the other camps)for the day to get their (one) caribou. He said normally the herd is spread out thru all the camps, but last year if you weren;t at the first camp, it was tough! frown.gif

I'm heading up in mid December (12th). This will be my first time hunting bou, so it should be interesting. I'll be taking my rifle and muzzleloader. I was thinking about taking my bow, but I have not decided yet.
