Exercising for hunting season.

I believe I am going to be in pretty good shape for this hunting season. I have been regually (every day or every other day) riding my bike some pretty far distances (not sure exactly how far). This way by the time hunting season rolls around, my legs and cardiovascular system will be in good shape. Then when squirrel season and other small game seasons get here, I can use that as my last string of workouts before deer season rolls around. When September gets here, I probably won't be able to ride my bike anymore because of school, but walking the woods and hills will have to be good enough. I would actually prefer that anyway. Who else here is preparing for the hunting seasons like this in one way or another?

Re: Exercising for hunting season.

Cool.

I've been going to the YMCA now for about a month.

I'm on the patented "Jeramie workout plan" with the weights. I've increased my strength quite a bit since starting, and I'm hoping it will help me drag Tom's deer ooot this season.

Cardiovascularly, I'm on the stationary bike for 1/2 hour every other day, then 1/2 hour walking at a 15 degree incline on the treadmills. I'm hoping that will help my fat butt get up the hills of Knox county a little easier this year. tongue.gif

Re: Exercising for hunting season.

In this heat I have become "The Great Indoors-man".

I have been able to walk as far as the mailbox every day, pull out another hunting gear catalog, and carry it all the way back into the air-conditioned house.

Intentional exercise goes against my present energy conservation program. (I will suffer again when October arrives)

Soon I will be spending a lot of time fixing up the stands, and mowing the shooting lanes.

Re: Exercising for hunting season.

I carry 70 lb bundles of shingles up and down a ladder all day, hang drywall over my head, pull a skreet board while doing cement work, tear shingles off with a potato fork, and chase 3 kids around the house for 5 hours after i get home, any more excericise could very well kill me grin.gif

Re: Exercising for hunting season.

Funny you should mention exercise and hunting because it is like shoveling snow, far too many people die or suffer needless injuries caused by poor physical conditioning. My thoughts are that the best way to attack this problem is to never allow yourself to get into poor condition. I try to hike the mountains year round along with lifting weights and putting the treadmill to good use during bad weather. If you have a lawn to mow and it is less the two acres, you should be using a push mower and, if going on a mountain hunt, toting a 50+ pound pack on your back while mowing. Do not use every excuse possible to get out of doing something physical. Get off you butt and move. The number one reason for a poor experience on guided/outfitted hunts is poor hunter conditioning. If you can't pack an elk quarter or drag a buck a couple of miles out of the woods than the chances are you are out of shape. Enjoy life, get out and experience it.

i lift 3 days a week. but here is a reminder for everyone. never do a bicep and tricep the day you are going out hunting. it cost me a buck that would have look very nice on the wall. it was 15 yards and i couldnt even get my bow back. i was like a fish out of water frown.gif

Hey Horst and Buckee, sounds like ou guys are getting all the exercise you need just in work. Residential construction work of any sort really is a work out. And that is what I plan on getting into later in life. So when I get there I will finally be able to exercise and get paid for it. LOL.

Re: Exercising for hunting season.

I do nothing special to get in shape for deer season, I don't think I ever get too out of shape. Today I spent a few hours chasing a toddler around and the rest of the time cutting wood and hauling 4ft lengths of jackpine logs. A typical day keeps me busy...not tomorrow though, I'm walleye fishing. grin.gif

I usually don't do anything, i am a young strappin' 18 year old man! grin.gif Actually since I started my new job as a mechanic, i've buffed out quite a bit on my upper body. Lifting those 3/4 and 1-ton truck tires up to chest level to do tire rotations gets ya in shape pretty darn quick! tongue.gifwink.gifgrin.gif

Re: Exercising for hunting season.

I recently changed jobs and I have equipment on 4 floors so I take the stairs several times a day, been using my wife's elliptical (sp?) when I can, and I try to keep up with a 9 and a 4 year old.

Yep, still going great. smile.gif

I'm surprised at a few things:

#1--Strength came back much faster than I thought. I now need someone to work out with because I've maxed out on a few machines and I'll have to go to frees and a spotter.

#2--past surgeries have only affected my shoulders namely a nerve in my right shoulder from the last surgery. Today on the military press I got a pretty good tingle on the back of my forearm, that was a first and a bit scary.

#3--I might have to find a new gym. My present one, while cheap, has way too much eye candy walking around--reminds me of how much of a dirty old man I really am. tongue.gifwink.gif

#4--I have not pulled or strained any muscles yet. I attribute that to proper form and the proper weight.

#5--appetite is through the roof, and I can't seem to control it. frown.gif

#6--It's tough to type after your tricep workout. crazy.gif

All in all, it's a lot of fun getting back into the gym. Sure hope I can sustain the workouts when I go back to work and the kids start their fall sports. crazy.gifgrin.gif
