Guest MattA311
Ok, I have never used an expandable, but this year I am considering them. I shoot a Hoyt Cybertec with a 31 inch draw at 70 pounds.. so I know I have way more than enough KE. I am just leary about using them.. what if it's a quartering away show? What if I hit bone and the blades break? I know expandables are very accurate... but are they as dependable and strong? I am all about accuracy... but at the same time want something thats totally dependable as well. Your thoughts would be appriciated.
Michiganbowhunter_SQ2
Re: Expandables i have been hearing great things about grim reapers....i recommend trying these...my cousin took 3 deer last year with them...didn't have one fail on him...as for quarting away shot...i have heard that they open up good on those shots...not sure how the hold up against bones though
Guest MattA311
Re: Expandables I was thinking the NAP spitfire pros look pretty sweet. Cut on contact... if I don't use an expandable I am going to try the crossfires and get those quick spin vanes put on my arrows.
billkay
Re: Expandables Grim Reapers are the way to go. The opening blades are set back further than most, allowing a greater quartering angle without any problems. Took 2 deer last fall. One went 5 yards, the other about 40. Guest Finn
Re: Expandables I switched to Rocket Steelheads 100's. I've heard great things about them and look forward to using an expandable for the first time on a deer. JimT
Re: Expandables I to started using GrimReapers last year for deer because I heard so many good things about them. I did not take a deer with them though. Give them a try though, I think you will be happy with them for sure.
ranchand99
Re: Expandables I love the snypers.I used to hunt only with thunderheads. They are awesome fixed position heads. They did shoot different from field points.I had to waste a few in the target to have an accurate set up.I used to use them with my slower bow 230-245 fps with complete pass throughs. However, when I got a faster bow 265-275,they started windplaning real bad.I started trying mechanicals.First I tried shockwaves. They pulled intestines through the exit hole on quartering shots.Terrible blood trails.Second I tried 100 gr rocket steelhead, not impressive. No bloodtrail.I was lucky the deer passed away within sight or I would have never found him. That deer stood there, then laid down.It took ten minutes. That was rediculous,I felt so bad.The thing is I hit him high in the top of the lungs, and hit a main artery under the spine.Third,Spitfires.I took a few animals with them, they were sharp, but the blades did not open until the broadhead was in the animal. On 4 animals only 2 of 3 blades opened on a quartering shot.Fair,bloodtrail.On 2 hit broadside it performed flawlessly. Also,I could not get them to work right after I replaced the blades. All deer shot with previous broadheads were found, some after exstensive searching though..Finally I was watching Chris Ashley on the primos video using the snyper so I tried them.First deer complete pass through, blood everywhere.Second deer spined,it went 6" through the backbone.I have never seen a broadhead go through a backbone. They usually stop in it,with my set ups anyway. In reference to kick out.I will tell you this. Now I hate to admit it ,but this is a true story.I had a doe come in.She was broadside with the right side of her body towards me.I put it behind her shoulder.I released. She ducked, spinning toward me,and tried to turn around to head back in the direction she came from. The arrow hit her in the left side of the face, cut along the jawbone, then busted through her neck paralizing her instanly. Not what I wanted, but I was amazed. The tip of the broadhead curled. But it did not ricochet off of her jawbone.AMAZING.I will tell you how it is.The snyper entry wounds are larger than the exit holes, because of the way the blades slap out.I have had no rubberband failures or problems. They are sharp.I would use them this year again, but I am going to try the new Snyper xp3,or possibly stick with the titanium 100's my bow is currently sighted in with..The picture below is of the snyper from the above story. Mirage
Re: Expandables I used a mech. broadhead last year for the first time and it did the job but not alot of blood it was a nap three bladed broadhead. The buck only went like 40 yards or so good thing i would have never found him. The shot was a little further back and high which could explain some of the blood not being there but still? Good luck
Guest antlers21
Re: Expandables I have used expandables for six years now and have not lost a deer I have hit. I have shot 7 deer and 1 antelope with nap spitfires and rocky mountain snypers. I have buried them deep in bone without any problem recovering them. Just my two cents worth. magnatecsteve
Re: Expandables I've heard alot of good things about NAP Shockwaves, several people at the local 3-D range swear by them. I use 100 gr Muzzy 3-blade myself. I shot my very first deer with bow using a 100gr Vortex SEVERAL years ago . The blades twisted like pretzels, but I got the deer. Make sure they are STRONG, whatever you shoot.
rossman
Re: Expandables rocket arrowhead's 75 grain wolverine or 100 grain steelhead. complete pass throughs for all 5 bucks Ishot at. The longest blood trail was about 100 yards. the others, only 20 yards. Rocket arrowhead designed their heads to rotate inside the animal, thus giving you more cutting surface. Go with these they are great.
Guest deadeye270
Re: Expandables another vote for grim reapers if you have the KE to gaurentee a full pass through. If so, they leave a grewsome bloodtrail.
ranchand99
Re: Expandables Snypers have the same angle with the blades that the rockets do,but they are sharper. Also the spitfires, and crimson talons all have the blades angled like rocket tells about. maddhunter
Re: Expandables I beleive all of them are good and probably will get the job done. I myself am going to give the G5 Tekan2s a try, they are cut-on-contac and lock back when opened, and hear they are very tuff. The main piece is solid (one piece) stainless steal. Check them out at Bass Pro G5 Tekan II
The_Kat
Re: Expandables I shot Rocket mini blasters 75 gr. and the doe I killed last year bled excellent. Looked like someone got a paint brush and painted her blood trail, and it was not the best of shots. She went down in less than 100 yards

Adjam5
Re: Expandables I have used the Shockwaves and the terminal performance on them is incredible. They REALLY fly like field tips and make a big hole! I like the triv-vex tip of the shockwave, it blasts through bone like butter. The only shortcoming I see in these heads if the "O" ring thats needed to keep the blades closed. The Spitfire does not use these "O"rings and is held closed with a ball detent. Matter of fact, sometime the Spitfire will close after passing through a deer. This is normal with the pressure to hold them open as passing thru and snapping closed after penatration. I think NAP make some of the BEST products out there, I swear by them. I ONLY use expandibles with my Mathews Outback.
gowest
Re: Expandables I shot a doe at 25 yards..square in the shoulder blade. My set up was a Mathews SQ2 at 73 lbs, 3-71 ACC's at 29" using 100 grain shockwaves. The arrow penerated 3" and the shockwave ferrel broke right at the insert. I wrote to NAP, and the service people were great explaining that this was not typical performance...may be I just got a bad batch? I couldn't tell you if it was design or the quality that was the issue. A year before though (with a different batch of Shockwaves) I shot my biggest buck ever and it only went 35 yards. I'm using G5 Monotec's now.

snapper
Re: Expandables [ QUOTE ] I'm leary of any broadhead that has moving parts. That's one of the main reasons I shoot Montecs. [/ QUOTE ] I used to think the same way...then I tried the Rocky Mt. snypers. Although it doesn't happen often...I was wrong about mech. heads! I will continue to use the snypers! Guest madabouthuntin
Re: Expandables I have been shooting NAP Shockwave's since I started bow hunting about 5 or 6 years ago. I love them! I hit a doe a couple of years ago with one of them and on the way out it hit her front leg. The bone was Shattered! The broad head was still able to be used again. I can't say enough about this broad head. Steve
