LifeNRA
I think smoking during archery season has a lot more to do than during the rifle season. Because there are more hunters out for the rifle season. The smell of man is everywhere! But for archery it is different, not that many hunters are out. Dont get me wrong, they can still spook during the rifle season too. I smoke during the rilfe season as well. One day I had a doe walk to ten feet of me and never phased her. I guess it also depends on how often deer come into contact with humans.
Tominator
Re: know that smell?? If your deer are around people and a populated area all the time, maybe that's the reason. Either that or you're always down wind of them. I'd concentrate more on quitting smoking if I were you.
VTbowman
Re: know that smell?? The motion of smoking is what can cause deer to spook more then the smoke itself. IMO I do not smoke but my brother and another friend does. I have heard of several guys say they have deer come to them, from down wind and all. For me, its my belief that any smoke in the woods is an alarm. But then there is the whole fireplace smoke argument. LOL Personally ANY smell in the deer woods that is not nature made or a product of those particual surroundings is an odd or out of place smell/scent. I like to go as scent free as possible. [ QUOTE ] Personally ANY smell in the deer woods that is not nature made or a product of those particual surroundings is an odd or out of place smell/scent. I like to go as scent free as possible. JMO [/ QUOTE ] I'll 2nd that!! From my experience, the more pressured the deer are, the more alert they are to anything that's out of the ordinary. Be it scents, whatever. I have a good friend of mine that smokes some while he's hunting but puts his cig butts in a closed container. He goes through the same routine of bathing, etc. before he hunts to reduce his scent profile but doesn't go to the extreme of wearing charcoal lined camo suits like I do. He gets busted by deer blowing at him or just running off becasue they got a whif of his scent a lot more than I do and he is just as careful about playing the wind as I am too. Mater of fact, that doesn't happen to me too often at all unless they catch me moving at the wrong time. Basically even though you take all the proper precautions to play the wind correctly, sometimes you have to deal with swirling winds or changes in wind direction while your hunting. JMHO but playing your odds to reduce your scent profile as much as possible reduces the distance that a deer will detect your scent. The more pressured the deer, the greater the distance they sense danger from foreign scents.
VTbowman
Re: know that smell?? Its funny, that one time my brother and I were bowhunting this log road at about 200 yards apart on the side of this steep hill. We have Motorolas and I could swear I smelt smoke. I call him and ask and he has this long pause. Then replies. "You can smell that...??" Like I just busted him. LOL To me its just not a good idea to do it if your trying to be stealthy. JMHO. buckbuster11
Re: know that smell?? I've read in some places that smoke helps to hide your scent. I dont know how much truth is in that though. Maybe you are just playing the wind in the right spots. I doubt it has anything to do with deer not being allarmed of cigarette smoke because if they can smell the cigarette, the can smell you. buckee
Re: know that smell?? Around here, in the fall especially, everyone has either a woodstove going or a brush-pile burning in the backyard. I think deer get used to the fact that in the fall, there is always some kind of smoke smell in the air. I'm still pretty cautious though. I don't like lighting up unless I have the wind in my favour. There have been many times though, where I have just lit up, and there he comes ....quickly butting it out and getting ready, can get frantic...LOL

wtnhunt
Re: know that smell?? Dont smoke, but know someone who does who always had great success while hunting even though he would be smoking on stand. Dont think the smoke is an offensive odor to deer. Dont think they associate smoke with humans.

Smitteken
Re: know that smell?? Native americans actually used smoke to cover their own scent. I would think that a deer would probably naturally investigate the smoke. Forever smoke and fire has been a part of not only civilization but also a naturally occurring phenomenan. I would imagine all animals would possess a natural schism to investigate in case of eminant danger. too_pointer
Re: know that smell?? While I don't think its a good practice, I have killed many a deer while puffing. For those who have been to deer camp, you know how bad the odor of beans or chili can get People still knock the deer down LOL too_
ruttinbuc
Re: know that smell?? When the deer associate the smell of tobacco to a man and danger he is most definitly going to be on alert. Remember, for every deer one may have killed or seen while smoking or chewing on stand, how many didn't he?
