Re: KIDS HUNT OF A LIFE TIME ENTERIES

Hey everyone,

Here is a heart warming story of one of last years youth winner rewritten by Marshall MacFairlane. Please note that Hunters Helping Kids has become an independent organization separate from QDMA since this article was written. CONGRATULATIONS to Hunters Helping Kids!!

Hunters Helping Hunters Inc. Board Member Assists

Another Great Charity

Hunters Helping Hunters Inc. Board Member Dick Worden not only makes a difference in the lives of the recipients of HHH’s assistance, but he also pitched in to make a difference in the lives of several youths through his involvement with “Kids’ Hunt of a Lifetime” - an event put together by the South Piedmont Branch of QDMA.. Once asked to assist, Dick was very active in recruiting applicants by placing posters in several local sporting goods shops, placing notices on several hunting-related Message Boards, and also e-mailing several announcements to his contacts across the country. These efforts resulted in mailing out 345 applications for entry to the event - a deer hunt on the Fork Farm in Albemarle, NC scheduled for November 12th through the 14th. In the end, there were six youths selected, and Dick’s efforts helped produce three of those youngsters! One hailed from Utah, one was from Pennsylvania, and one came from New York. This year, four more entries sponsored by other groups were also selected to attend the event, resulting in a total of 10 youths having the opportunity to participate.

This is a super event, and is the culmination of a ton of effort, heart, and coordination, on the part of the South Piedmont Quality Deer Management Association members. The Fork Farm provided use of their 1200 acre facility for the event. Each participating family was provided a hotel room by the South Piedmont Branch of QDMA. In addition, the SPQDMA crew helped prepare all of the meals. They provided guides, as well as transportation to and from the hotel. Each kid received a Model 710 Savage rifle including scope, a complete camo outfit, and back pack loaded with hunting accessories! On Friday, each of the kids was taken to a range for target practice, and to get familiar with handling their new rifle. On Saturday, each youth was provided a guide and placed in a stand with the intent of harvesting a mature doe - as the Fork Farm practices QDMA. Kids also received archery lessons and a tour of the farm with photo sessions of the entire group. Of the ten youths in attendance, eight of the youths were successful in harvesting a doe - two of which were successful in both the morning and evening hunts! There was an evening banquet that included a fine meal followed by a duck-carving demonstration. Essays submitted by each youth on “The most influential person in their life” were judged, with a plaque being awarded to the young lady from New York. This young lady happened to be one of the kids that Dick sponsored! As if that was not enough, a surprise was in store for all 10 youths…. Each youth was asked to select an unmarked envelope on the table at the banquet. Tucked inside each envelope was a bonus hunt! Donated were: a turkey hunt in South Alabama, a bear/deer hunt in Michigan, a swan hunt in North Carolina, a deer hunt in Texas, a duck hunt in Louisiana, a deer hunt in Mississippi, deer hunt in South Carolina, a duck hunt in Arkansas, a deer hunt in North Carolina mountains and a deer hunt in Kentucky. Drawings for a Savage 710 in 25-06 and a new bow topped of the exciting evening.

Dick added a personal touch to the experiences of one of the winners. The young lady from New York lives only 10 miles from Dick. Since Dick was to take part in the event as a sponsor, and would be making the trip from New York to North Carolina anyway - Dick loaded up the family in his motor home and provided transportation to North Carolina. On the weekend prior to the big event, Dick and HHH Inc. member Robert Jones took the young lady from New York hunting on her birthday. She took her first deer, a five-point buck! Dick could not find his own words to express the 14 year-old girl’s joy and excitement, but to quote her own exclamation - “This is way cool!” Followed of course, by lots of hugs and kisses…. Have you ever seen an old man blush?
