RangerClay
Hi Guys, I am having trouble with my tomatoes that I have never seen before. For some reason all the red or turning red tomatoes have developed cracks in the skin or have split open. Anyone know what causes this? The entire crop is ruined? Thanks Ranger
Guest Andrea
Re: Tomato Trouble Hmmmm....when that happens here it's cause they either shoulda picked by now or too much heat and not enough rain.
AaronS
Re: Tomato Trouble I had several of my grape tomatoes do that last week when it was unbearably hot. I assumed it was that the weather was causing the tomatoes to grow faster than the skin would stretch. Just guessing though. It only happened to a few of mine, I was able to pick a gallon of grape 'maters off my two plants Monday evening.

Thanks Ranger [/ QUOTE ] Yeah, its been happening to our tomatoes as well. The cherry tomatoes have cracks, and theyre not red yet, but the big ones are doing fine, it was most likely the heat causing it.
Tominator
Re: Tomato Trouble Tomatoes are able to suck up water pretty readily with the root system they have. If you had a dry spell for a long time, then a good rain, there's a good chance your tomatoes will crack. The only weapon you have to cracking is buy a crack resistant variety like Jet Star, and water your tomatoes evenly. Don't let dry periods go too long, and never water your tomatoes from the top as this will encourage fungi and wilt. When watering just stick a hose at the base of the plant and let the water flow a bit. Here's a pretty good website for more info: Tomato Help

dogdoc
Re: Tomato Trouble this always happens to my tomatoes during the high heat of the summer. The first crop never cracks but the later tomatoes always do---I have always heard it was from watering too much during the summer--just like Chris said. todd
