pointing_dogs_rule
Hey guys!!! I was watching a hunting show on the outdoor channel the other day a one of "those famous bowhunters" stated: that if you wear a harness that only goes "around your waist" you can only hang there 4-5 minutes before you die. I guess I did not realize this. I assume because of the pressure on your rib cage inhibits your breathing ability???? Can any one else comment on this subject? Sometimes I only use the waist belt witha strap vs a full body harness. TIA the dog
HarvDog
Re: safety harness question???? If you're only going to use a single belt style harness, wear it around your chest. This is much better than around your waist but no where near as good as a full body harness.
dogdoc
Re: safety harness question???? dog---I have read that also. I currently use a chest harness. When I bought a gorrila stand last year it had a full body harness. I practiced with it at home so I would be all set when I was in the dark---first time i tried to put it on in the dark I got so tangled up and just tossed it in the back of the truck and put my chest harness on. I am seriously considering getting the full body vest. They now make it in a mesh and it looks to be the most comfortable and safest fall restraint system out there. It is a little pricey at 120 bucks but that 120 bucks may be the best money spent. http://www.deerhuntinggear.net/Safety_Vest.htm todd
JimT
Re: safety harness question???? I use a full body harness most of the time, but when I am not I am sure to have the regular kind around my chest.
Guest fishermanwhohunts
Re: safety harness question???? Go with that Rocky safty vest from Bass Pro. I belive it comes in Realtree and is reversible to solid blaze orange for those season overlaps.
Tominator
Re: safety harness question???? When I started bowhunting I didn't wear anything. The next year I wore a single belt, and I wore it around my waist. The only near fall I've ever had was when I was wearing a waist belt and just about to climb up on a branch in a white pine tree. The branch broke and I fell about 2 feet. I was facing the tree when I fell, so the belt caught me, but I wasn't bent over at the waist. I guess I got lucky. For about 5 years now I've been wearing a full body harness, and yeah, they are a pain to get into, but well worth it. I think I owe it to my family. preacherman
Re: safety harness question???? I personally use the Hunters Safety System vest and always feel very safe and secure in it. If you are thinking about buying a new one, I would indeed look into this one before you purchase anything else.

LifeNRA
Re: safety harness question???? I just bought this one and love it! I tried the one that came with the treestand I just got and it was a nightmare in the daytime! Cant imagine what it would be like in the dark! The mesh ones look nice but $20 bucks more. Cabela's did not have the one I wanted, so I wound up getting MO Bowhunter. I could have ordered it on-line though. The harness I got came with a DVD, I would recommend watching it a few times. Lots of good life saving tips! Just so you know, if you do fall from the tree with any vest or harness on, they recommend that you do not use it anymore! They say to replace it. Sounds little expensive. But what do you value your life? I also got the Fallguy retractor, it stops you instantly! Just like a seatbelt in a car. But what do you value your life? [/ QUOTE ] Don't hesitate....replace it if you fall more than a few inches. Steady presure like leaning back in a harness is fine or even slipping and having the harness steady you. But if you ever take a real fall in one replace it immediately. The kinetic energy in fall on a static system(no strech in the harness or ropes) is imense. even though the harness may not show any damage it can have microtears in the fabric or stiching that can fail in any future fall. I use the same harness I use for mountain climbing...it is rated for much higher kinetic stress than any hunting gear.
tedicast
Re: safety harness question???? I don't know if all hanesses are like this, but on my seat of the pants harness, the strap that attatches you to the tree has a fold sewed into it. when you fall hard, the threads are designed to rip apart to absorb some of the shock. If you were to fall the harness is to be replaced. Still much cheaper than a visit to the ER, or worse.
preacherman
Re: safety harness question???? [ QUOTE ] check out the gore-tex adds, with the bowhunter hanging from a safety harness attemping a difficult shot, to me it looks like he does not even have the harness on completely, it looks to me like his shoulder straps are hanging around his waist, and where is his stand? is this a new way to bowhunt? [/ QUOTE ] you are probably thinking about the "Tree Saddle" it is a type of "tree stand" that a company came out with a few years ago where you actually just sit suspended in the air snugged up against the tree. you can shoot from any angle that the deer comes in. have a friend who has one and he loves it.....don't know if I could get the guts to sit in one of those, though. Tony
Re: safety harness question???? my full body harness is simple to put on and all i have to do is put the strap around the tree and use the climbing clips to lock it in.. it came with my API stands i bought a few years ago.. i also have 3 of the waist type safety straps.. i still use them and i like to put them around my chest.. preferably under my jacket so they dont interfer with my bow string... shoot Strong Tony
dogdoc
Re: safety harness question???? LifeNRA--do you mind me asking your height and weight. I'm wanting to order one from cabelas and trying to decide on what size i need. I'm 5"10 and weight 165#----I'm thinking of getting the S/M--so it might be a little snug and keep all my clothes out of the way of the bow string---but I still want to make sure I can wear it in the cold weather when I have several layers on. thanks todd

My goal is 180. Even if I do loose another ten pounds this vest will be fine! Here is the web site that has all the sizes. http://www.deerhuntinggear.net/Online_Store/on_line_store.asp Thing is this vest can be worn inside or outside the clothing. I would get the L/XL and try it both ways, inside and outside. If its too big send it back and exchange for the S/M. I believe the X/XL should work for your height and weight though. You kind of in between the sizes. If there is a Bass Pro or Cabela's near you go try one on! If not order it from CABELA'S! They will take anything back you return! Drop me a PM when you get it!
