Hitchhikers

Has anyone picked up a hitchhiker? I have twice. But they just weren't any bum. They were close to my hometown and I helped them get on their way.

One was actually this morning. I was on my way to St. Louis to work so I took him about 15 miles along my way. He ended up being a pretty nice guy. He couldn't figure out why i was working on Sunday, well come to think of it neither can I. tongue.gif

Re: Hitchhikers

I'm hardly ever out on a hwy. so I don't really see any hitchhikers.

But the little town I live in you intend to know everyone here. Usually if I see someone needing a ride I will give them a ride to where ever they need to go...

It kinda gives you a chance to catch up on the local gossip around here to... grin.gif

Re: Hitchhikers

As a rule I have never picked anyone up.

However I broke down on the interstate a few years ago while driving home from work, it was cold and I did not have good shoes nor outerwear to be out there.

I was about 3 miles away for a off ramp but well over 25 from home, and had no cell phone at that time.

It was not fun.

I walked maybe 200 yards and some guy pulled over

and asked if I wanted a ride. I was not thumbing, just walking.

He must of seen my car.

He ended up being my father-in-laws neighbor, whom I never met, and he gave me a ride all the way home even though I just asked for the next exit ramp..

There ARE some good people left in the world.

However I am too afraid to just pick up anyone. LOL

Re: Hitchhikers

I won't just pick anyone up. I talk to them first and find out who they are, where they're going, and where they're from. If they're a little nutty let em ride in the back of the truck. the way I look at it is I'm doing something good for someone else, if they try something at least I went down doing a good deed. (But they're going down with me)

My friend picked a guy up, let him ride in the back of truck, and even took him through McDonalds to get a burger. Ha

I think its ashame that people have to be scared of doing a good deed.

smitteken--I agree, but there are just too many crazy's out there to take a risk. About 15 years ago in Oklahoma a hitchhiker was picked up by a nice family and he killed both parents and a kid. Just not worth the risk.

Re: Hitchhikers

Nope never have.

Seems to me that there aren't as many hitchers as there was when I was a kid. I can distinctly remember plenty of "hippies" trying to hitch a ride when I was a kid.

Just too many crazies out there now, unless they were in distress, or I knew them, I don't think I'd ever pick one up, and I'd never hitch myself.

Re: Hitchhikers

I have picked up plenty, I will admit to passing on "scary looking" people, but I have picked up a few by asking what is up, where they are going, etc: I have had a few that were "odd" and those ride in the back: I also picked up a guy in Montana. Gave him a ride to my home town (where he was going) and 4 days later got a phone call from the police: He was wanted for car theft, and was just arrested in town! Since then, I picked up a few, I set a pistol on the dash and told them to hop in.....2 have turned ME down! I have been broke down on the highway having to work 100 miles away in the a.m. and sat there while no one would stop! Guess that's why I stop for most people......as for the vehicle deal: I had a buddy who was hitchhiking and couldn't get a ride, so he walked down the interstate until he found an abandoned car. He has spent 9 hours trying to get a ride, once he got to the car, he had people stopping to help all the time: He got a ride where he needed to go.....lots of wacko's yes...but sometimes a guy just needs a ride....

Re: Hitchhikers

I even pull over to help people with flats but I dont do hitchhikers. Its nothing personal but you never know about people. You may be picking up someone in need but again you may be picking up someone that will rob, kill, etc. I hate that people in need are left stranded but the world is full of Idiots these days.

We came down south out of Estes Park, Co one time. Two guys were walking down the highway. I had my wife with me so I wouldnt have stopped for anything. I passed them even though they were thumbing it. After I passed (doing roughly 45) they started screaming and actually throwing gravel/ rocks at the car. I was tempted to see if they cold outrun the escort but it was already a bad situation.

Re: Hitchhikers

In 1985 i spent 9 months hitch hiking across New Zealand and Australia, quite an adventure but in two rural countries that had low crime rates. I don't believe I'd do it now.

Cheers,

Re: Hitchhikers

I travel the Trans-Canada Highway every day going to and from work. I see LOTS of people. Some even have signs with their destination. I've seen a few that say "Calgary" or "Vancouver". I can't imagine wanting to drive 3000 miles out west with a hitch-hiker. crazy.gifgrin.gif

The only one I picked up was one of my buddies in school. He got kicked off the bus for mischief and he was out along the highway with the 'ol thumb in the air, so I decided to be nice and give him a lift. smirk.gifgrin.gif

I'd NEVER pick up anyone I didn't know though... like the others said.... too risky. crazy.gif

Re: Hitchhikers

True story, when i was 17 or 18 yrs old me and 3 other guys were out driving around and seen this guy walking down the road, it was real hot out and about 12 miles to the next town so we pulled over and picked him up.It was one of the crazies you guys are refering to. frown.gifI slid over and let him in by the door in the front, my other friend was driving and i was in the middle. The ride started out ok but the guy was obviously nuts, he started babbling about his parents being killed when he was young and something about the color red confused.gifOne of my friends in the backseat was chewing and spitting in a beer bottle and the guy seen him lifting the bottle up to spit in and freaked out.He started hollering about someone in the back trying to hit him with a bottle and the next thing i knew he had slipped an ice pick outta somewhere and was holding it against my ribs, he was hollering and becoming pretty agitated and i didnt know if he was gonna stick me or not. shocked.gifAnyway the next 9 miles or so were pretty intense as the guy was screaming and pressing the ice ick harder against my ribs, the guy driving was freaking out, and I was trying real hard to stay calm and talk to the guy.I started asking him about his parents again and it seemed to calm him down, he quit yelling and let off the pressure on the ice pick a little. Finally we hit the next town and dropped the guy off without anyone getting hurt. This was in rural Iowa where we dont run into to many wackos so I hate to many imagine what some of the guys on the interstate are like grin.gif

But for all that Ill still pick someone up if theyre actually having car trouble or something.Ive been on both sides of the deal and it still sucks to be broke down in the middle of nowhere in the middle of the night. frown.gif

Re: Hitchhikers

Stopped at a car wreck one time to see if everyone was alright. Some illegal mexican jumped in the truck and was telling me to take him to town. I told him no way. I was noticing tatoos all over hima and then when I saw 6 teardrops on his face I told him to get the he!! out. He refused. I rolled down his window and he asked what I was doing. Out came the 40 cal. and I informed him if he did not get out I would be splattering his Illegal greasball *** all over the next 5 yards of the ditch.

He saw it my way.

Cops showed up luckily I knew the cop and the mexican started telling them I was crazy and going to kill him. I knew the cop. Told him what really happened and was on my way home.

One of the scariest days of my life.
