HarvDog
What would be the recommended pistol for protection against black bear? Sure, I could drop $1400 on a Desert Eagle 44 but do I absolutely need that much? Could I go with something in a 10mm, 9mm, 45, 40, 38? HarvDog
Re: Pistol Recommendation I'm not married to semi-auto. There is the obvious benefit of more rounds of course there is a potential for jams, but I would hope that six almost guaranteed shots would do the trick with the right caliber. HarvDog
Re: Pistol Recommendation For instances, let's say I'm camping in the mountains or even hanging treestands in preparation for the hunting season.

AJ
Re: Pistol Recommendation Pepper spray would work better also. Bears won't really bother you. They may raid your cooler, but that's still not a legit reason to shoot one. I have a bigger need for protection against banjo playin type of individuals than bears. So, no need to spend the extra on bear mace? [ QUOTE ] I have a bigger need for protection against banjo playin type of individuals than bears. There are definitely black bears here that will not think twice about tangling with a human. It's happened (more than once) in the recent past. I go nowhere in the woods without either my Glock 29 10mm or a S&W 29 .44 Mag.

Guest gfourhunter
Re: Pistol Recommendation i like the ruger 480. i also use it for deer along with my 35 remington contender. never need to think about bears in indiana.
Missed160
Re: Pistol Recommendation Go with the Pepper spray or repelant.. Absolutely nothing wrong with buying a hand gun, but I wouldn't spend the money if bears are the reason you want one..
HarvDog
Re: Pistol Recommendation Yeah...good point. But I think I'll just pick up some pepper spray for now since I did just buy a new bow.

Obviously, I have changed my mind. Actually, when chatting with my wife about the upcoming season, I happened to mention the bear situation and what we talked about here. I told her that I would just pickup some pepper spray. She said, "why don't you take both?!" So, I thought about it for like a half a second and said, "uh...ok...sure!" She's even gone with me to shop for the pistol.
