Re: need tips for scouting deer.

try not to jump deer out of their bedding area.

When scouting I try and be as scent free as possible. I dress and use my scent eliminators just the way I would if I was hunting.

Try using trail cams if you have them.

Don't over scout an area. Scout just enough to figure out there are deer there, and where they are.

After season starts, always keep your eyes open to new sign. Deer patterns change often and you need to change with them.

I like to start scouting near a water source, then move to food sources, then travel areas and staging areas. I stay away from know bedding areas at all cost.

There are many other tips, Im sure you will get some great responses.

Re: need tips for scouting deer.

Unfortunately my way takes several years. LOL

I own a 100 acre piece of land and have hunted it for 7 years now. Over time I have seen and found deer trails that are beat down like cow paths and used every year.

Stand locations get tweeked from year to year but the trails, woodline exits, saddles, etc. seem to be the same every year.

I do most of my scouting during and after the hunting season.

I feel summer scouting just gets ya close to an area where deer are since they change thier patterns come fall and rut. It hard to set up a deer stand over trails they use during summer only to find out they use different trails in the fall.

Been there-done that... LOL

Obviously keep an eye out for rutting buck sign to0 and just make notes. You will be surprized on how one tree or particular licking branch/scrapes will get hit year after year by different bucks. Even if you get the big one your after over his sign, another will take his place and use the same areas.

Good spot is a good spot, even to deer..

As for scouting a new location. As the others said use your optics 1st, then do some walking threw the area to find funnels and saddles.

Stear clear of thickets since they will most likely be holding deer bedding areas.. Just note where they are.

Some very good tips so far! The tip that I am following the most this year (since I have actually gotten stands up early for once) is using topos and prior knowledge to find funnels...this is where I kill my deer in years past, but usually from the ground. I figure if there is something that makes the deer that I can see walk closer if I see a shooter it stands a better chance of coming in range.
