Even if you disagree with his findings. It is intersting to see bolt actions from various manufacturers being torture tested head to head. PH rates rifles. I'd like to see how they actually did the testing that caused the failures they spoke about. The tests they run are part of their PH licenseing program. And I agree that a PH must have a gun that will be 100% reliable (or be as close to perfect as possible). And I do not think that any ......pure factory gun .......could be expected to live up to this without a bit of blueprinting & aftermarket work. I always read about the Rem 700 extracor failures but I have never seen one. And I have read about bolt handles being pulled off because they are brazed in place. I have never seen this until I read the current issue or Successful Hunter (Wolfe Publishing). Phil Showmaker & his daughter found a Stainless steel M700 with Synthetic stock & 6x Burris scope in the sand along a stream in Alaska. He tore it apart and in doing so the bolt handle came off,.....but as he said........it was above what would be considered standard duty for any rifle LOL. The scope was toast. Filed with sand, water & had sandblasted glass. I was surprised to hear the problems they had with the Rugers when cycled quickly. But again, even that problem is not unfixable. I only have (3) CRF rifles, A Ruger RSI 243 Mark II. A M70 30-6 and my Whelen being bulit on the Daly Mauser. As a regular hunter I'd feel fine uing a PF gun on dangerous game. And if I'd get a chance to go I have a LH Browning SS in 375HH that I'd use. BUT if I wrere a PH I'd want the CRF. And after my Whelen is done, I just may do another Daly Mauser in 458 Win Mag just for fun. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
AJ Posted August 5, 2005 Report Share Posted August 5, 2005 Re: PH Take on various rifle actions I have 9 Rem bolt action centerfire guns (Model 7 and Model 700) and I have yet to have an extractor go bad. Some are older than I am. I have seen one new gun that had machining chips around the extractor and it would not work, but a couple seconds with a dental pick and it worked great. I have a few CRF guns. All but one are commercial M98 guns (MkX, FN, etc). The other is the Win 70 Classic. I would have to say, if I were a PH for DG, I would be carrying a sxs double gun. Yep, they are expensive, but if I were a PH, I would have a lot of $. Meaning, it would take a lot of $ for me to do it. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
