Re: help with increasing memory on computer PLEASE...

BTW...just for clarification:

Memory is the RAM in the computer.

Disk space is the harddrive where files are stored.

So, it sounds like you need to free up some disk space.

You could start with clearing the temporary internet files by selecting Tools | Internet Options then clicking the Delete Files button in your browser.

Jb,

Good to hear you are feeling better

It should be under start>programs>accessories>system tools or something very similar. I am not running XP but that tends to be standard across many operating systems.

Be sure to run cleanup (which gets rid of trash files) and defrag (which compresses the files to eliminate empty entries on the disk).

Re: help with increasing memory on computer PLEASE

Pictures typically take up a lot of space.

Go to your C: drive and look for files with .jpg, .gif, and .bmp extensions on the end of them. Double click on them if you're not sure of their content, then close them, and if you don't want it, right click on it and select delete. Remember to empty the recycle bin after that.

Re: help with increasing memory on computer PLEASE

LOL,,,sounds like somebody needs to invest in a CD-Burner, or a slave drive to store all of his large files on...... grin.gifgrin.gifgrin.gif

Alittle advice J.B. sounds like it's been awhile since that system has been wiped clean and had a fresh install of windows....

Deleting files and programs will save alittle space on the hard drive but everytime you delete something you leave behind bits and pieces of that file or program....after a period of time you end up with bits of data that are useless and confuse the heck out of the operating system and memory chips.....

I would susgest a clean install of your operating system and programs, and invest in an external hard drive to store all of your large and important files on.....a CD-Burner these days is almost a must, this will also save on aggrivation latter on down the road......Adding memory to a laptop or a desktop is a cinch, but be sure not to but or try to install more than that system board can actually use....

I added a slave drive to VTBowmans new computer, for him to same all of his photo's and programs on and he'll tell you himself how much cleaner and faster his machine runs...... wink.gif

And it would help greatly to know what you have for a computer and it's operating system,,and I'll check out some specs for ya........

If you have more than 80% of you hard drive full,,you system will actually become unstable,,sort of like what you are experiencing.... wink.gif

Re: help with increasing memory on computer PLEASE

If the error message stated that you don't have enough memory, then you can delete files until your hard drive is blank and it wouldn't help any. You need to find out how much RAM (Random Access Memory) you have, what type of RAM it is, and how much room you have for more, and go from there.

Hard drive space and memeory are two different things, so you're wasting your time deleting files.

But if you have over 400 .bmp files, you probably do need to delete some of them. grin.gif

Re: help with increasing memory on computer PLEASE

One other thing that may cause this error is too many background programs running and taking up your systems memory. Make sure you close any other programs that may be running in the background. Most of those will have an icon in your start bar by the clock in the bottom right corner of your screen. right click an icon and click on close or exit. Don't close the one that looks like a pirnter though.

The other way to purge unneeded programs is to open the task manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del) and close programs by selecting them and hitting "end process" button. But I wouldn't sugest that if you don't know much about computers...some of those programs look like junk but are actualy important to the computer's functioning.(don't wory if you end one it will shut down the computer and the program will be back when you reboot)

Re: help with increasing memory on computer PLEASE

Just something to think on JB, pictures don't cause VIRTUAL MEMORY ISSUE'S programs do....this issue is usally a gaming issue, but I have seen spyware and viruses cuase this also.

Have you ran an updated antivirus program and some sort of spyware program to see if this could be the case....?????

And I noticed with your last post that your laptop is a HP MODEL,,,,,WHAT MODEL IS IT ???? This is very odd that you would start getting a virtual memory error out of the blue,,,,,does this only happen when you try to open the arial photo on the disk you just recieved ?????

If this is the case the images themselves my have some type of corruption which won't allow the program of choice to open these images......

In any case deleting pictures fron your hard drive won't fix a vitual memory error..... frown.giffrown.giffrown.gif

Try to open that the images on that disk on a different computer after scanning it for viruses first,,,this is to see if it will open correctly, or if it's just your computer......

Re: help with increasing memory on computer PLEASE

I have Windows 98 Second Edition. If you right click My Computer, go to Properties, then click on Performance. You will see how much Memory you actually have, also how much System Resources are free.

When my PC boots up I am at 94% free on System resources! I turn off all programs that I am not using! I go to Start, Run, then type in msconfig then click OK, click on the start tab all the way to the right. Uncheck all the programs that are there! All but the keyboard and the programs that are from the ANTI-VIRUS that I am running, which is Norton. You will be asked to re-boot the computer.

Everytime you load a program into your computer it wants to have the ability to run once the computer loads up. I elimate this by going into the start set up under Run. But Windows XP should take care of this for you, but I am not sure about XP. You can add an extra hard drive to your computer as well. I have two.

Good luck!

Re: help with increasing memory on computer PLEASE

Now it makes sense to me JB,,,,,I didn't realize the paging file was involved.....

Try this and let me know if it helps......

You can increase the size of your pagefile. Right-click My Computer --> Properties --> Advanced tab --> Settings button under Performance --> Advanced tab --> Change button --> Check the Customized size radio button and type the values for initial and maximum size (make them the same, about 2.5 times your physical memory).

So for you this means a number of....560 for each value.... wink.gif
