Dumb idea? Inputs please....

I was in the market for a new 3D deer target, and recently bought a cheap one at Walmarts.

$57 for a "Delta-WhiteTail Buck".

(Yea I could not believe the price either...)

I wanted the one by Mackenzie that shows the vitals in color as a cut away of the hair and skin showing the organs.

But sadly my budget was not that big. LOL

Beside who can pass up $57 for a 3D target????

I thought about pinning a 8x11 sheet of paper with these vitals printed on it as a substitute,

Is this a dumb idea?

Could even do both sides to see how your arrows penitration angle would hit the far side, or exit wounds, etc.

2nd part.

Does anyone know where I could download such a picture of the oragans or vitals of a deer and turkey?

Thank you for your inputs in advance..

Re: Dumb idea? Inputs please....

Hense another reason I do not want to paint. I can remove paper real easy.

Judge-

Its not like I plan to ONLY shoot at the colored paper vitals.

More of just an extra tool to aid in shot placement from different angles. Uphills, tree stands, ground blinds, etc.

I have been at this game for many, MANY, years and know the deal out on the field.

You mainly get a brown target with no 10 ring. LOL

BTW I hardly ever shoot at moving deer with a bow. JMO

Ditto...I always stop em up with a personal nasal doe call grin.gif Works everytime

I would just get some magic markers and mark it on the target.

Re: Dumb idea? Inputs please....

I think its a good idea. i really like the idea of putting it on the other side as well to see the angle of your hits...I dont know if they are to big but you could buy one of those cheap cardboard deer cutaways they have the organs on them....cut it out then you would be able to make copys or just trace it???

Shawn, how about getting a burlap bag and using markers to draw and color the vitals on both sides, and slit the bag up both sides on the seams then you can drape the bag over the target and pin it in place.

My only hesitation is that the deer's vitals are inside...hence a target on the outside does not necessarily depict accurately the location of the vitals. Granted, you can adjust for this with your drawings. But besides a broadside shot, those targets can be misleading. I always check to see if the arrow would have gone through the "Boiler room"

Re: Dumb idea? Inputs please....

I would put the paper vitals or whatever you're going to use on the back side only (assuming your target is shot up enough to always allow the arrow to poke through). The reason I say that is that the whole reason you are shooting at a 3-d target is to get the sight picture of shooting at a deer form. I wouldn't think that you would want something stuck on the front that acts as an aiming point. You want the deer's form and features to remain as life-like and undisturbed as possible.

One of the problems I have with 3-d targets is that after a while you start getting a visible area in the kill zone which, in effect, provides an aiming spot that you will never see on a real deer. Before long I find that I am using that blemish on the target to aim at instead of picking a spot each time. It kind of ruins the reality of the practice session. I might as well be shooting at a paper target on a hay bale.

Personally, I think your paper vitals target pinned on the front of the deer would wind up having the same effect.
