LifeNRA
This is usually the kicker for the season for me. I was driving around this week looking for some new areas and checking out the old ones as well. Who else dove hunts?

Tominator
Re: Who dove hunts? Love it, Love it, Love it! Marks the start of hunting season. I have a buddy with a 15 acre field that's surrounded by corn and beans. His field gets tilled every year and we let the fox tail grow up, then mow it off a couple weeks before the season. We usually limit out until they migrate. Sure is fun.
Guest andymansavage
Re: Who dove hunts? I'm ready for sep 1st! Got a new 20ga pump for this hunt.We hunt my friend's 700 acres of corn, alfalfa and lakes. Last year 7 of us limited out before we got to the cabin to unpack(bailed out at the gate). Doves are good, but it's a duck and goose heaven. I'm taking my Weimey along on the dove this time to get her "birdy" for the year. Hope everyone has a blast! waterfowler_gal
Re: Who dove hunts? I am not a big dove hunter... About 80% of my hunting buddies are BIG dove hunters... I was brought up at looking at them as the equivelant to a blue jay or a chickadee... Not something I have become custom too... However I would like to try it just so I could make an honest opinion on whether its for me or not... Do they taste good?
lil hunter
Re: Who dove hunts? I don't do much of it. I like to, but theres just not many doves around here these days. Squirrel huntin kicks my season off. Usually my dove hunts somehow evolve into squirrel hunts anyways.
coles
Re: Who dove hunts? i shoot em when they are around but usually the first time it gets below freezing they are gone. so they dont stay around too long.
Tominator
Re: Who dove hunts? [ QUOTE ] Do they taste good? [/ QUOTE ] Not to be cliche, but they taste like chicken. Dark meat. My kids love to take the fillets and make their own jerky mix in ziploc bags. Most of my doves are on the smoker about 9 hours after I shoot them. Other ways of making them are on the grill after marinading them in Italian dressing or wrapping them in bacon and throwing them on the grill. Just remember, they are not song birds, they are game birds. Go out and shoot some, it's a blast.
Guest andymansavage
Re: Who dove hunts? They are a great way to improve your shooting skills and they help me get ready for chuckar, pheasant, grouse, huns, quail, ducks and geese. It is a fun hunt. CuzTheyFly
The Magical \"Hour of Power\" A Texas Dove Legend I am so ready to Dove Hunt , I will share this story with everyone in hopes they like it. We do have a little southern secret down here about dove hunting. Over the years if you hunt doves enough in most any part of our state. You might get to experience at least one special Dove hunting trip that comes close to "a holy grail of dove hunting " so to speak... We call it the "magical hour of power " and let me tell you folks, it will stay in your head for years. When this happens an average shooter (skill wise) can hit a limit of say 12-15 in a hour flat! A good to decent shot ,may be walking back to truck with in 45minutes. Since my Dad is a great shot - he finished- walked to the truck and brought me a cold beer buy the time I had collected all my birds and cased up my gun. We were now offically done! As the west Texas sunset slide off in to the horizon, We just sat on the truck tail gate in awe sipping an ice cold beer watching the sunset fade. Once my excitement turned to appreciation I made the dumbest comment ever," you know Dad Uncle Ray and Scott (my brother) are gonna be very very disapointed they missed this hunt." As I glanced at the truck bed full of Doves a huge smile developed. Well lets go get these doves cleaned and head back to Fort Worth now. Nothing beats the rush you can get while loading and shooting as fast as possible, and the action gets crazy. Meaning normally leary doves just come right over head with out fail. We have hit a few "magical hour of powers" over years, but that one was our very first near Ranger Texas, Brownwood and Coleman County. It was a tylical late season hunt with fresh Northern birds just arriving. A trip where you drive for hours in hopes of a decent day in the field. Some times a few freinds or relatives will choose to stay home to catch cowboys game, versus trucken several miles to hunt. For what ever reason, Dad and I made the trip for a single Sunday hunt, and struck gold. Most old texas dove hunters would say, heck ya justy caught heavy Norther influx, that does happen occasionaly. But I have heard so many similar stories with differnet Dove hunters over the years. I fugure it is time we give these thing a fancy name...And that folks is why I love hunt Doves in Texas. Have safe and happy hunting season. Tominator
Re: The Magical \"Hour of Power\" A Texas Dove Legend [ QUOTE ] "a holy grail of dove hunting " so to speak... We call it the "magical hour of power " [/ QUOTE ] I'll have to adopt that one. We have indeed had a few of those days, except we usually hunt the mornings. You can almost set your watch by the morning flight as the birds come off the roost and down into the field for breakfast. You talk about frantic. While you're reloading, laughing and making fun of your buddies, you have 3 or 4 flying right over your head, which makes your buddies laugh at you, and so it goes. First couple weekends it might take me 2 1/2 boxes to get my limit. After the 3rd or 4th weekend I've got it down a bit better and can get a limit with one box. My best day was 15 birds with 20 shots.

slugshooter
Re: Who dove hunts? September 3 is the opener here, already put in for the day off. I usually only go dove hunting 1 day of the year but last year I went 4 or 5 times, anything after the first day at the field I hunt at is worthless, last year I shot 10 on opening day, and a total of 4 more on the subsequent trips. I love it though.
Smitteken
Re: Who dove hunts? I love it so much. This is one of the only times of the year that all of my buddies still get together religiously. Some years are better than others, and we usually kill more Miller Lite than we kill doves. But I have a higher bag limit on Miller Lite. The best part is grillin them little babies up. Man I can't wait.

LifeNRA
Re: Who dove hunts? [ QUOTE ] Hi all, your season is great, Sept 1st for doves, ducks and geese, here we have over 15.000.000 doves each year from apr to oct, and plenty of ducks from dec to aug, did anyone came to this part of the world to hunt? [/ QUOTE ] No! But I seen plenty of hunting shows that go down to South America to hunt doves! They say you can get up too 50 birds per minute!!! Thats a lot of doves! As much as I would love too, just cant see spending that kind of money of doves! On my way back from Cabela's today, i drove though where I dove hunt. Looks like it might be a good year this year!!! BTW!!! Welcome to the forums!!! I believe your the first person from Bolivia I have met!
Tominator
Re: Who dove hunts? [ QUOTE ] Well its not that expensive if you know people here, there are companys that charge over 7000 dols for a week hunting here. With 1000 we hunt for a week, you can shoot over 1000 shells in one day, more if you want and if your shoulder lets you and get something like 600-800 doves just you. thanks for your welcome and will stay in touch. [/ QUOTE ] God I'd love to do that some day. I'd have to say Dove hunting is not quite as fun as killing deer, but it's pretty close. I love hunting them. Less than a week now!
