Strut10
Any time I travel, I look around and wonder to myself what the turkey hunting is like there?? Well........this morning, as we were driving home from the shore, we saw 3 gobblers on the roadside.......standing in the sand. They weren't but a few miles off the beach!! I'm not sure how you'd hunt them in that thick crap they have for woods down there. But there they were.
huntn4bucks
Re: South Jersey gobblers I find myself doing the same thing Strut. I was recently in Las Vegas and caught myself thinking that it would be hard to sneek up on a gobbler in those mountains...I have no idea if there's even any turkeys around there. Rhino
Re: South Jersey gobblers I know what you're talking about Strut. I do the same thing when I see turkeys or just terrain that looks like it would be ideal for hunting turkeys. I have hunted birds in some pretty thick stuff before. Select cut timber that's several years old is some pretty thick stuff to try to figure out how to hunt birds that live in that crap. It's harder to hunt but it can be done. The worst part is the dang briar thickets that grow in that mess. The birds seem to figure out where there are areas within that junk that is not as thick. You just have to figure out where those areas are and how the birds use them. As you know well, a vocal gobbler will give his position away to you so it's just a matter of patterning those suckers just like in the big woods. The biggest difference is they seem to have fewer choices of how to move from one place to the next. Even though it might sound like it might be easier to figure out after you learn some patterns, it's not. There have been a number of times when they got by me and left me sitting there wondering how in the world did that $*#% get over there. If I have a choice though, I'll hunt the big woods. It's a lot easier to reposition when you need to, not to mention what nasty thick stuff with briars does to camo clothing and exposed skin.
