Guest Phaseolus (BeanMan)
Re: How stupid are we? One thing is for sure, no matter how good or bad a school is... if the parents are poorly educated and don't bother to take an interest in their children's schooling then the children will turn out just like them. Many things need to be taught by parents, without that it is a lost cause. BeanMan

wtnhunt
Re: How stupid are we? Think it really has to be a combined effort to best benefit the kids. Sure some teachers could care less about the kids they are supposed to be educating. That happens, and think it probably varies pretty dramatically in different parts of this country. A good school system should recognize failure on a teachers part and deal with it, however in some areas of this country I am sure they have to take what they can get, and it is truly sad that there are so many kids out there who will never reach their potential because a school system has failed them. A good teacher should recognize if a student has different needs and if the parents need to be more involved both should make every effort to ensure that they work with the child to encourage the child to work towards their potential. Sadly in the world today many families have only one parent or both parents working, the kids dont get as much attention at home with school work as they should or as they used to years ago. Who makes the parents more accountable? The teacher and school system has a responsibility to the child to keep the parents informed while at the same time a parent who cares about their childs education will already be involved without the teacher bringing it to their attention. That is why I say it has to be a combined effort. If a teacher does not properly inform parents of a child that is slipping or that the child may have different needs, you cannot fully blame the parent. There are teachers out there who just wants to shuffle kids through who might suggest that your kid is doing fine while the kid may really need some more direction, and parents really cannot be blamed for that.
