Very Cool

If you've been following my garden posts you have noticed that this year's crop of sweet corn is a bumper crop. I don't know why except to say corn seems to thrive in the heat and humidity, and we've had a lot of that this year.

Anyway, every year I sell my excess by putting a sign out at the end of the driveway. For the most part, none of my corn goes to waste. I either eat it, freeze it or sell it.

Well, I've gotten to maximum density as far as eating it so I put the sign out 3 days ago and have had a grand total of 2 customers. The first guy says "I only have my wife and I, I only want 4 ears." and gives me $2. frown.gif Then he pulls out his cell phone and says "you know Bob up there at Beekist meats" (a little butcher shop up the road), and I say, "no, but my wife goes there." So he says, "well, he wants corn to sell at the shop, I'm going to call him and you two can negotiate your price." cool.gif

Turns out Bob is a B-26 pilot from WWII and he heads over. 15 minutes later Bob and I are talking planting strategies, varieties of corn, planting dates, B-26's, walk behind planters, teaching, kids, yadda, yadda, yadda. As Bob is looking over my corn he says "How 'bout I buy all this and you deliver 15 dozen of the bi-color to me tomorrow morning."

shocked.gif After I picked up my jaw I said, "what time you want them there?" grin.gif

So it looks like I have a home for the rest of my corn.

Even though I want a new rangefinder to replace the piece of crap Nikon that failed me, I think I'm going to donate the proceeds of the corn sales to Norm.

So Normy, look for a check soon buddy. wink.gif

Re: Very Cool

Good deal. My grandfather always finds ways to get rid of his excess, as well. After all the family gets their share, and the cows get theirs, he usually sells most of it to local farmers and, unfortunately, baiters. (but what they don't know is that his son, my uncle, is the game warden, so he knows who's buyin' all the corn grin.gif) Anyway, a couple years ago he started a deal with our meat processor. They process all of our deer (my grandfather and I, and all my uncles and cousins) and at the end of the season, he pays him with corn. My grandfather has known the guy for years, so it's a wonder they never thought of this earlier. He processes all of my grandfathers cows he has slaughtered as well.
