WABS
I've finally gotten to refinishing my 12 gauge 870 Express. I've already stripped it, sanded it and restained it. I'll start putting finish on it tonight. Probably a couple coats of Sealer and then 3+ coats of the final finish. I used dark walnut stain on this one as opposed to the cherry stain I used on my 20 gauge 870. I'll take pictures of both when I get my project done and post them for you to see. Tominator
Re: 870 Express Refinish In Progress [ QUOTE ] Very cool WABS! You should post pix of the progress as well as the final outcome. [/ QUOTE ] Ditto. Harv's new stock is on its way to me as we speak. Hopefully I'll see the FedEx guy today so I can finish it before school starts. BTW--Harv, do you want a walnut stain on yours, or do you want to stay with the light color of birch? I will tell you that Remington tints its finish a little red which covers up the grain in the birch. Up to you. Let me know.

Anyway, what do you think will look better? Do you have pictures of the different possibilities?

WABS
Re: 870 Express Refinish In Progress No problem -- Harv if you can wait to make your decision on the type of stain until I post my pictures you'll have an opportunity to see the difference between the Cherry (lighter / red) vs. Walnut. Too late to show in progress pictures - I'm starting on my final finish tonight. Already sanded, stained and sealed.
HarvDog
Re: 870 Express Refinish In Progress Thanks WABS. Timing will depend on when the package arrives at Tominator's place and how quickly he is able to work on it. We'll see how that goes. How soon do you think before you can post some pix since you'll be doing the final finish tonight?
Tominator
Re: 870 Express Refinish In Progress This is minwax's dark walnut. Kind of hard to get a real feel for color on the internet. Basically, walnut is darker, birch is a lighter color. The picture of my 870 has a mahogany stain on it. Birch is harder than walnut, so it doesn't take stain real good. Just remember, you can always go darker, but you can't go lighter. Here's minwax's examples: Stain Samples.
AJ
Re: 870 Express Refinish In Progress While it is all the individuals choice, I like the Early American stain from Minwax. I did this laminated maple stock in Early American and I do like how it turned out. This is my 6mm-06 Improved

WABS
Re: 870 Express Refinish In Progress I'll have them on Monday. Almost done (1-2 more coats) of finish on the 12 gauge. I'll dig the 20 gauge out of the closet this weekend and get the pictures taken.

WABS
Re: 870 Express Refinish In Progress OK here they are. The first are of my 870 Express 12 Gauge using walnut stain And these are my 20 gauge using cherry stain I also have a picture of what the 20 gauge looked like before I started that I'll post later if anyone is interested. A couple of things to note. If I had to do it over again I'd stain the 12 gauge one more time with the walnut stain to get the wood darker. The birch is very dense and doesn't like to take the stain very well.

WABS
Re: 870 Express Refinish In Progress Thanks guys! I'm quite happy with the result. So much better than what I started with. I think I'll post the before picture of the 20 gauge so that you get an idea of what I started with. Don't have one for the 12 g.

WABS
Re: 870 Express Refinish In Progress It's really the forestock of this gun that made me want to refinish it. I'm very happy with how it came out, however if I had to do it over again I'd of used walnut stain over the cherry. I like the darker look, but I didn't have any walnut stain in the house and you know I just couldn't wait.
