VTbowman
As some of you may already know, I inherited and Ruger "New Model" Blackhawk .357 Magnum from my father. Its about 30 years old and in very good condition. I want to take a deer with it but not knowing very much about pistol ammo, I was wondering what the effective range on deer sized game would be. Outside of what my abilities are, and particular ammo choises, just wondering as far as energy, yardage drop, etc. I plan to keep within 40 to 50 yards for my personal range this year. I am not using a scope either. No drilled or tapped holes and I am not impressed with the B-Square mount. The closer the better... LOL I was knocking the crap out of a soda can at 40 yards a few weeks ago. Should be fine at that range. Thanks
hangunnr
Re: Maximum effective range? You pretty well answered your own question. With the ammo I referred you too earlier, if the shooter is up to snuff the load will perform out to about 100yds. Your self imposed limit of 50 yds will be more than fine. Hope you get a chance to score with your Ruger. hangunnr
WNY_Whitetailer
Re: Maximum effective range? I'd say about 40-50 yards max...Myself, I don't think I would stretch it much beyond archery range but that's just me. I would probably opt for a good round too...Maybe the 180 grain Winchester Partition Gold rounds. They should do the trick...Even out to 100 yards if you can shoot that far with open sights. hangunnr
Re: Maximum effective range? WNY, That's the exact load I recommended to VT in some earlier posts. I feel it's the best factory ammo available for deer hunting with a .357mag. I'm really fond of the Nosler Partition handgun series of bullets. They can be driven very hard and still perform well when encountering bone. They'll do the job if the shooter can place the shot. hangunnr

My 1st hand gun I am able to hunt with. Just want to be correct. Thanks!
WNY_Whitetailer
Re: Maximum effective range? I just purchased a 44 mag but I think a 357 may be my next choice...I have been ooogling the Taurus Tracker in 357 mag...
