From a lot of reading the consensus seems to be that without dogs you are pretty much hopeing for a lucky encounter...and have very little to no chance of that happening. The area really needs a high density of cats in order for ya not to be really wasting your time. I've heard predator calling will work, but even at that, it's a chance encounter.
