Guest Roadkill10
Its time to pick the dates and place. I'm thinking about the same time as last year, 2nd weekend in Nov. witch is the 11th -13th. This works well with me , I have to work the 1st. and 3rd. weekends. Place is still open! What do you think?
huntinsonovagun
Re: OKIE, DEER CAMP !! I am thinking a little more centralized. It was a 4 hour trip from home, which doesn't include the 1 hr drive I had from school to home. Maybe like pushmataha or james collins....something like that. Broken Bow is a long dadgum way! MCH
Re: OKIE, DEER CAMP !! I've heard that Antlers has a bowhunting only refuge. Haven't been there, though. That would cut an hour off Ryan's trip. I'm on vacation that week, Mike. So if an official one falls through, I'm planning on hitting the same camp spot in Three Rivers that weekend. Sure hope things change Dale....who's gonna put Ryan's stand up??
Griz
Re: OKIE, DEER CAMP !! [ QUOTE ] Sure hope things change Dale....who's gonna put Ryan's stand up?? [/ QUOTE ] I don't know if I could handle another year watching Ryan skip through the woods in his camo thong on and all the noises that went on in that tent and being camped by that river...It brought back that scene from the movie Deliverance...lol...Thank goodness I had a gun by my side...LMBO... And I'll tell ya right now. Keep an eye on Mike. You may have to show him again which end of the bow is the dangerous end. You know how those leftys are...Never a dull moment around him...Dropping his wienie in the fire and all...LMBO... With 6 months of going to a therapist, I'm still having nightmares of that week end.... It's scary I'm telling ya...Just plain scary... ROFLMBO... MCH
Re: OKIE, DEER CAMP !! Yeah, Dale...but you didn't have to sleep in the same tent as Ryan!! Now that's scary.... Come on guys....don't let this end up like this years fishing trip. I'd like to do a little scouting before hand. So let's make a decision. MCH
Re: OKIE, DEER CAMP !! Well Mike....like I said, if it falls through, you're more than welcome to come down this way for the weekend. I'll be at the same campsite just on the other side of the creek. One of my buddies told me about some bowhunting only public land up near McAlester around some lake??? Haven't researched it but I may try to today.
bfletch7441
Re: OKIE, DEER CAMP !! James Collins is a great bow only hunting spot. There's never many people there either. My buddies and I went there for about 5 year's in a row for opening weekend. First year Casey shot a 160 class 12 point, nothing but does after that. If you all are going there, you might just have a new guy join you. Only if I can talk the boss into letting me get away for a few day's though. MCH
Re: OKIE, DEER CAMP !! From what I can tell, the area my friend was talking about is James Collins. It has 21,000 acres and is open only for bowhunting. It's only 20 miles north of McAlester which would be two hours from me. From what I've read though, there is only one designated camping area??? Maybe someone else could tell us more. But I put a vote in for James Collins. I plan on making it on Thursday and staying till Sunday. If we decide on JC, then I might make a scouting trip down there in September.

bfletch7441
Re: OKIE, DEER CAMP !! You are right MCH, there is only one designated camping area, it's right at the front of the property where you drive in. The camping area has gravel roads, toilets, and it's relatively flat for anyone staying in tents. So far as dates go, they close it even to bowhunting for several weeks around rifle and blackpowder season's for their controlled hunts. A quick look at the regulations, I don't have any handy, will tell you when it's open. The game ranger and a biologist live on the property, and are really nice to talk to. When your there, be sure to make a walk over to the check station at the gate, they've got some fantastic sheds and pictures of the deer on the property. MCH
Re: OKIE, DEER CAMP !! They'll be open on the weekend of the 11th-13th. They close quite a few days in October for their controlled hunts but they're only closed during the first 9 days of gun season in November. Have you hunted there before bfletch??? Is it normally crowded??
