7th
I have been loading for about 38 years now and never thought about this till my 10 year old got recoil shy. He got hit in the nose with a .410 and that did it, well I got him a .243 Win handy rifle youth and was looking to get the recoil down as best I could. I load all my rifles with IMR-4350 or 4064. The 4064 used 5.5 gr less then the 4350 with the same bullet and velocity. I know that this much less powder will help the recoil some but with 4064 burning so much faster will the slower 4350's longer burn be more of a push then a kick with the 4064. I know I am spliting hairs here but anything would help. I have a simms recoil pad on it and will load some 70 gr bullets on the bottom end of the Sierra loadings, to get him shooting and go to some mid range loads in the 100 gr bullets to hunt with. Thanks, Frank and Zac.
AJ
Re: Some help for my son. I hear ya. You can load him some of hte Nosler 85 gr Partitions. Yes they are light weight but will still kill any deer. The lightest charge of 33.0 gr of 4064 will give you 2809 fps in a 24" barrel. In that gun it only generates about 6 lb/ft of recoil energy. About the only other noticable reductin would be the addition of a muzzle brake.
7th
Re: Some help for my son. AJ, I have killed some deer with the Sierra 85 gr HPBT in the .243 but was thinking that the 100 gr SPBT would be more forgiving for someone with so little shooting and hunting under his belt. I do like the 85 gr and have never recovered one from a deer but my thinking was the ex-15 gr would help him in a bad shot. Again, looking for something to help him. Frank. Zac. 7th
Re: Some help for my son. Well, I have been getting him out with a .22 RF and another handy rifle in .223 but he still don't like shooting much so I don't push it. I forgot I had Load From A Disc and ran some loads through it and this is about what I got. With a 70 gr Sierra BletzKing at 3,000 fps: IMR-4064 takes 35.8 gr and has a felt recoil of 6.6 lbs. Going with the IMR 4350 takes 41.6 gr and has a felt recoil of 7.5 lbs. After showin him what a .410 load recoil is like, Zac thinks that the .243 will be fine. Yes it is up above the .243 even with 100 gr bullets. I think I will go with AJ on this one and load the Sierra 85 gr HPBT GameKing at 3,000 fps with IMR 4064 and a felt recoil of 8.5 lbs for deer hunting. I don't think he will fell the dif with a deer in the scope. I also think that I am going to get the new Quick Load for the putter to help with the LFAD software. slughunter
Re: Some help for my son. i dont know if you are looking to do this but put a limb saver shock pad on it. the persition fit rock. it takes away 56% of the kick. im 14 and have a 7mm, i put one on and it workes like a charm.
