Scope mounting question

I have a Springfield/Remington model 1903 30.06 that I'm mounting a BSA 4x16x50 "DeerHunter" scope on using Weaver rings/plates. Everything seems fine except for the screws on the rear plates - they are too long. The tips of the screws extend into the barrel (about 1/8") such that you cannot pull the bolt back if the screws are tightened.

How would you compensate for the lengthy screws? For example, use a washer to make up the difference?

Thank you in advance for your comments.

Re: Scope mounting question

That's easy, grind them. I bought a kit of scope ring and mount screws and replaced most of my old ones that had slots with new ones using Torx heads. The lengths are generic so I just ground them down to the correct length. You can also use a file, it will just take longer. A dremel will also work, but be careful not to bugger up the threads.

BTW, use something to hold them as you are grinding them as the little devils get hot.

If the screws aren't the same lenth from front to back you may have them in backwards.

Good thinking, but the plates came in separate packages. Grinding/filing may be an option too.

I should have mentioned that this gun has been "modified" several times. It once had a scope, I purchased it with "military peep sights", and they also had a Mauser boldt put in. I wouldn't be suprised if the bored the barrel or something - the boldt seems large to me.

Thank you everyone, for your comments. I now have some options to consider.
