Encore Questions

Recommended Posts

Good day fellow hunters! I have a few questions concerning the TC Encore. My wife got one for me for Christmas last year and it's about time to start shooting. Are these guns truly capable of being accurate at 200 yards? That's what I hear but am just wondering if this is true. Any experiences? If they are, do you sight in at 200 or a certain amount high at 100? Do most of you guys shoot 150 grains and is a necessity for 200 yard shots? Does anyone have experience with the oversized hinge pins and are they really beneficial for accuracy? Just sitting here thinking about these things as I wait to find out if I get drawn today for Kentucky's elk season!

Re: Encore Questions

I will try to answer your questions:

1. Are these guns truly capable of being accurate at 200 yards?

Yes they are. As with most guns, they typically are more accurate than the person using them. Once you find the proper combination of powder, sabot, and primer, you can be accurate enough to take deer at 200 yards. I have a custom Rem 700 that I used at 200 yards on groundhogs. If I can hit a groundhog at 200 I know I can hit a deer at 200. I was also able to keep 5" groups at 200 yards with my T/C Black Diamond.

2. Do you sight in at 200 or a certain amount high at 100?

It depends, what are you looking for? If you know your bullet's drop, you can sight in for anywhere. You can use Kentucky windage or dial in the scope. You will need a very high quality scope that is repeatable to do that. You can sight in X many inches high at 100 and have a drop of X at 200. It depends on your load.

3. Do most of you guys shoot 150 grains and is a necessity for 200 yard shots?

It depends. If I was going to be shooting to 200 yards I would definately use 150 gr of powder. If you are planning to go for elk, I would definately use a 150 gr charge with a premium sabot.

4. Does anyone have experience with the oversized hinge pins and are they really beneficial for accuracy?

I don't know, I never used one.

Long range accuracy with a ML is not easy. It takes practice and knowledge of your load, and how to read the wind. Those big bullets loose speed fast and are affected by the wind more than centerfire loads.

Re: Encore Questions

My bro and I bought a #2 Bellm Reamer, and pins, and reamed or guns and barrels to a #2 Bellm. We also sent our barrels to David White, of Precision Rifle Works to have the QLA removed. While he had my barrel I had him modify my Leupold Quick Relase base to a six screw design, and drill, and tap two additional holes in the barrel. It definately made a differnce, cutting my groups more than in half. I consistently get groups right around 1" at 100 yards.

Here are a few good TC links...

Re: Encore Questions

I have been shooting my encore recently getting it sighted in. I am shooting 3 of the 50 grain triple seven pellets behind a 250 grain barnes expander bullet. This will shoot a 3 shot group of 1.5", and I have choreographed this at 2300 FPS. Sighted in 2.5" high at 100 yards, the bullet is 3" low at 200. At 200 yards the bullet is still packing 1350 ft. lbs of energy. I have not shot an animal at 200 yards, but probably would if the conditions were right. Last year I shot a buck at 140 yards, the shot broke both shoulders and the buck dropped in his tracks. I hope this helps, good luck.

How are you getting the additional 100 fps out of your Encore? A 250 gr bullet with a 3 pellet load tops out at 2200 fps, if you have a tight bore. confused.gif

Re: Encore Questions

AJ

I have chronograped my encore at 2180 fps shooting three of the 50 grain pyrodex behind the barnes bullet. When I switched to the triple seven and gained about 120 FPS of velocity. I have shot the hornady XTP ML bullets with sabot and found they shoot about 50 fps slower than the barnes with the same powder. I would guess the fit of the bullet/sabot combination in the bore of the gun makes can make a difference in the velocity.

Re: Encore Questions

Thanks guys for all the replys. I'm considering getting the oversize hinge pin. I've heard lots of good things about these. I need to get a scope and am thinking about the simmons Aetec master series. I've had other Aetec's and they've all performed very well.

AJ, can you reccommend a good sabot/bullet to start with? Thanks.

Re: Encore Questions

I prefer Precision Rifle Bullets. I have been using them for 5 or so years now and they work great. I have not seen a bullet as accurate as their QT40. Their Dead Center is also a sweet shooter. They are the deal for the long range shooting you mentioned earlier. Cecil has an article on the Encore on their site. Its got some good info.
