PAbowhunter4life
Well, this morning I got my bow chronied a 266 fps. While it's not slow by any means, I'd like a few more fps, so I got to tinkering. First hing that came to my mind were the String Leeches. So I weighed a few sets, each set (2) were consistantly weighing in at 60 grains for the pair, that's A LOT of speed loss. So I went out and did some tinkering. Shot the SQ2 with them off. Bow was still plenty quiet, but not as quiet as I'd like to take in to the woods. So from there I slowly started trimming pieces of rubber off of the Leech and came to the perfect compromise IMO. I have the leeches cut down so that the only thing left is the part that is held in by the string, the initial chunk of rubber is there, but the arms that hang off each side are gone. I found that the bow is just as quiet with only the chunks as it is with the whole thing installed. Each one now weighs 10 grains, bringing the weight of the pair from 60 grains down to 20. Best part of all is since the chunk is the only thing left those arms can't jump off and bite me any more lol. At any rate, I figured a lot of you may have tried this already since there are a lot more knowledgable people than me on here, but I posted it anyway in case someone was looking for a quick way to gain some speed and still keep their bow plenty quiet. RJJ
Re: STRING LEECH EXPERIMENT................ I am glad that you posted this. I didn't know that you could trim them down and still keep the bow as quiet. i am going to have to do that to my sq2.

PAbowhunter4life
Re: STRING LEECH EXPERIMENT................ I haven't had a chance to chrony it again yet, but I wll be doing it ASAP. In theory, a 40 grain weight reduction should net anywhere from 8-12 fps going by the rule of archery. gain or lose 1 fps for every 5 grains of weight taken off of or added to the string. The other rule of thumb says for every 3 grains, that's why I said between 8-12. While I don't know 100% for sure if I'll see that much, I do know that before at 20 yards I could hold dead on and hit the X, if I do that now though my arrow sails about 1-2" high. I'll keep everyone updated once I am able to get back to the shop

I got a good deal on a bunch of them at Wal Mart last year after the season, so I figured what the heck, start tinkering. As I said, without them the bow was still plenty quiet, but not quiet enough for my personal preference. With the leeches trimmed down though and just the chunk left, I think I found the best of both worlds. It makes sense though because the chunk is the actual medium in the string that is doing the dampening. The arms (legs) never come in to contact with the string at all. I know they are just a place to direct more vibration towards, but when your bow is super quiet to begin with, the chunk apparently does just fine by itself. Ohiobucks
Re: STRING LEECH EXPERIMENT................ My leaches on the Hoyt started to wear and tear right where you mentioned you cut yours. I ended up doing the exact same thing you did, but not to gain speed, just to clean them up. No loss of noise reduction at all.
JimT
Re: STRING LEECH EXPERIMENT................ Thats cool..Looking forward tos eeing what you gained? Do you serve in your leaches? Believe it or not they can pop out.
PAbowhunter4life
Re: STRING LEECH EXPERIMENT................ Personally, I have never served them in. I have never had one pop out, I've only had the legs break off and come back and sting me, but I don't doubt what you are saying. I am off work the next 3 days, so I hope to be able to chronie the bow again ad see if I gained any speed, which I personally think I did. too_pointer
Re: STRING LEECH EXPERIMENT................ I guess I'm confused, what do you gain ? If your bow so quite before, why did you even use them Tell us what you found out. too_
PAbowhunter4life
Re: STRING LEECH EXPERIMENT................ Like I said, the bow was plenty quiet to hunt with without the leeches on, but it wasn't quiet enough for me lol. I am just one of those anal people. I don't just want silence, I want super silence. As for what I gained, while it hasn't been proven yet, I believe I have kept my bow super silent while at the same time reducing weight and gaining back some of the speed the heavy leeches are robbing from me. Chrud
Re: STRING LEECH EXPERIMENT................ Neat idea. That is one thing I love about the String Supressors on Mathews bows. String Leeches/Silencers are not needed.

mainebuck
Re: STRING LEECH EXPERIMENT................ put an STS on it and take out the leeches. it will take all your hand shock and vibration away and leave you with all your speed. PAbowhunter4life
Re: STRING LEECH EXPERIMENT................ Well, I had an STS, I was one of the first one on the bandwagon. HOWEVER, it made a very loud "POP" when the string hit the limb saver on the rod. It took away what little shock and vibration I had in the bow, but that popping sound was far to loud to be on my hunting bow, so I sold it.
