Arrow speed/kinetic energy

I've been shooting pretty well lately, so I got some new arrows and did some testing.

I'm shooting a 2003 Fred Bear TRX

27.5" draw

Gold Tip Pro Hunter 5575 arrows w.100 gr field points (total weight=380 gr.)

At a draw weight of 63 lbs, I was getting an average speed of 242.5 fps. Kinetic energy of 49.63 ft. lbs.

After cranking up the weight to 66 lbs, I saw an increase in average speed to 247.5 fps.

Kinetic energy of 51.7 ft. lbs.

Can anyone give me an idea of where my setup stands? I know I have a short draw length and can't really do anything about it.

Is there anything I can do to give me a little bit more speed other than growing longer arms?

Eventually, I'll probably be able to shoot it at it's max (70 lbs) but seeing that I only gained 5.5 fps, I don't think this will make much of a difference--also, I don't know if on a cold, damp day if I'd be able to do it...LOL.

Or should I just be happy I'm shooting well and not worry about it?

Re: Arrow speed/kinetic energy

The KE you have is plenty to kill a deer provided you hit them in the rgiht spot with a super sharp fixed blade head. I wouldn't recommend a mechanical head unless it was a Rocky Mt. Snyper or a G5 Tekan II since these heads have a cut on contact point and require almost zero energy to open.

As for speed, you could actually shoot a 330 grain arrow and still be right at the recommended 5 grain per pound minimum of arrow weight. That will gain you a nice chunk right there., but remember, sometimes faster arrows that weigh less can actually drop your KE, so try to find a happy medium. Check out the KE & Ballistics calculator on this link and try to find that happy place:

What all do you have on your string? Too much junk on the string can slow you down too. Give me a list of what's on there and I can help ya out.

Re: Arrow speed/kinetic energy

Case in point, I got chronied yesterday at 266 fps with my set up and I too am tinkering to gain a few more fps, but I have decided not to do it witht he arrow weight because after doing some testing I found out :

Dropping 20 grains of arrow weight adds 4 fps, but robs me of 2 lb. of KE

On the other end , adding 20 grains will slow me down 4 fps, but at the same time I gain 1 lb. of KE

Right now I am at 64 lb. of KE so I don't have the same issues as you, I just wanted to point out what I meant by experimenting and finding that happy medium of arrow weight and speed.

how do you find out what your kinetic energy is. right now shooting 295 grain arrow at 329fts with 58lbs pull .

dude---what kind of bow are you shooting? 329fps with only a 58# pull??? I know you are shooting a very light arrow but dang that's fast---the only bow I've seen shoot that fast was a High County using a very light arrow and a 55 grain head. I think HC is the only bow manufacturer that recommends an arrow that light.

Re: Arrow speed/kinetic energy

I am shooting 64# myself and believe me, deer, elk, bear, moose, whatever you want to shoot will come to it's death from an arrow leaving your bow.

However, I am working out a method to get some added speed without reducing arrow weight, and I've already gained a little bit, so my KE is going higher as I type lol
