Guest okie
Hey guys, I haven't posted in a while but I have a question for all you food plot experts. I planted the Tecomate 50/50 last year and was very satified with the results. What I want to do this year is put in a section of winter peas to see which the deer prefer. Has anyone ever planted winter peas and how did they do? What other plants do you guys recommend for attracting deer? I'm not real interested in perinals because our lease is so far away I don't have time to tend to them. Any suggestions will be helpful. Any of you okies know of a lease opening up in northeast Oklahoma let me know?
dogdoc
Re: Food Plot Question? hey okie---i'm a big fan of austrian winter peas--a great winter legume that really produces a lot of forage early spring. It will go in a winter dormancy but pops out of it usually early March. I prefer to plant my winter peas with cereal grains---wheat and rye grain. 50# of wheat/rye 25# of winter peas 2# purple top turnips or 75# wheat/rye 12.5# winter peas 2# turnips this is a great combination for both hunting attractiveness and good winter nutrition for the deer. todd
bowhtr1
Re: Food Plot Question? We have planted winter peas several times. Not the Autrailian ones. The pea do great but then when they start to flower the deer wipe them out. I mean they will make you think someone went through with a lawnmower with a bagger on it. If you are there at this time you will have some great hunting. It just so happened for us that they hit it during the week each time. I would plant something with it so that when they eat it up something else will be coming up. Clover would be good or wheat and oats. Good luck. We used a product call Buckforage.... they sell it at bass pro.... or you can go to the buckforage website.....The deer love it ! To my surprise its came up in the spring and the turkeys loved the oats as well.......
BowJoe
Re: Food Plot Question? You could also go to your locas feed store instead of just buying a brand NAME. My buddy planted turnips last year and the deer really liked it. I live in southern IL so I can really plant what we want in this area. This year my buddy planted corn in a 100' wide X 200 yd long strip next to the fence row we each have stands in. I also bought some mixes we are getting ready to plant from Biologic. We too are just experimenting with our areas and hopefully we will have it figured out what the deer in this core area like.
Guest ketchum
Re: Food Plot Question? Winter peas work great. I put plot saver wround one of my smaller pea plots yesterday. For an acre i mix 50lbs Peas 50lbs buck oats 50lbs wheat. This covers the area well. On smaller plots I mix in khale, 7 top turnips, and rape with the peas. I buy all my stuff from a local feed store, and mix it my self. I have had great success, for less money than buying the name brand stuff.
