Gator
I am about to inheret my fathers .54 cal T/C Hawken muzzleloader. Mom stated that it has been loaded for about 6yrs. Would it be safe to fire, or would I be better off getting a jag and pulling the round out? If I remeber right, it will be a 450gr Maxi Ball. Swamphunter
Re: T/C Hawken question I would try to discharge it with CO2. You know the compressed air dischargers. They work well and I have never not been able to push one out with it. Although I have never left one in for more than a couple of days. It should be safe with that I would think. If that doesn't work, definitely a gunsmith.
Guest Colorado Bob
Re: T/C Hawken question I got a T/C 54 but it's the Rengrade. It's a real thumper on mulies & elk. Hunt with it---you'll like it. CB
Gator
Re: T/C Hawken question [ QUOTE ] +First if it has corroded it would not be safe to fire!~!! Could be big bang! Second if it is corroded you will most like have to pull the breach plug and drive it on through. Thrid a 54 would use a 535 or 540 ball.a 535 and 120 gr RS shoots 3 inch groups a 100yd for me. Fourth if no experiance and you do not have a friend that is then best take this one to a gunsmith. Hope this helps Lee [/ QUOTE ] I may be wrong about which model it is, but I do know that there is no breech plug in it. It has been several years since I have seen it, but it will be in my hands after Thanksgiving, garuanteed.
ZooBear
Re: T/C Hawken question There is a breech plug at the end of the barrel. DO NOT REMOVE the plug. The breech plug on T/C Hawkins should Never be removed except at the factory. I would remove the load with a co2 discharger or you can remove the nipple, shake out the powder, trickle in a small amount of fresh powder ( 10 or 15 grns) and shoot it out. Im sure the gun will be fine. If there is a real problem with corrosion the barrel can be trimmed and a new breech plug installed. Good luck! RangerClay
Re: T/C Hawken question [ QUOTE ] DO NOT REMOVE the plug. [/ QUOTE ] DITTOO! DO NOT REMOVE! My father did it himself and regretted it since. I too would use a CO2 discharger then take it to a gunsmith for inspection. Ranger
Gator
Re: T/C Hawken question Thanks for the help guys. There is NO WAY I will sell this gun. It was my dad's, first and only ML, first one I ever shot, and he has since passed on. Heck, I may never hunt with it either, I really like the looks of the gun. I'll give it a good looking over and see how bad the barrel is, then decide on the best way to clear it. My main concern was if it would be safe to shoot at all, having set that long.
