Guest Defcon15
Alright y'all. After getting this last batch of pictures, I have some questions that y'all might be able to help me with. Before the pictures: If we have roughly 360 acres, would you guess that this is the one bachelor group that we would have or do you think that there might be multiple ones. In other words, would all the bucks on 350 acres group together or is that big enough to hold multiple groups?? Here are the first two pictures. My two questions about this deer are: 1) How old do you think this buck is? 2) If you look at the 2nd picture, you will notice that something is really wrong with his back leg. In many of the pictures of him, he is standing in a strange position like in the second picture. Do you think that he can survive like this? Next question. We have a ton of food for wildlife, but some of these deer look famished. I thought that they bulk up during the summer, but some look incredibly skinny. Do y'all have any idea why they might be looking thin? Could it be the heat? Any ideas? I just really liked this picture when I first saw it. But then I began to wonder why the bigger buck's body looks smaller than the other buck. What do you think the ages are of these two? Guest TheNumber1Young1
Re: NEW BUCK PICS okay, first question the buck is a great size for its age, i say this buck is 3 years old. cant be four. 2nd question. he probably broke his leg, maybe he was clipped by a car, but yes he will survive, just like us humans, we adapt to things.3rd question, them looking thin can be a number of things.1-they could be sick , i hate to say it but maybe a disease, or sometimes we dont like to eat when its hot so, maybe the heat is making them uncomfortable?ihave no clue.and the 4th question, those deer are 3 years old. CDubWSR
Re: NEW BUCK PICS first deer i would say is 3, and im sure he will survive because i have seen three legged deer b4 and they seemed to do just fine. as far as the deer looking thin, i agree. im no biologist so i cant tell you why but my guess would be the heat is maybe causing them to get dehydrated, b/c obviously they are using your food sources. the other thing could be that maybe the heat is keeping them from getting up and around and feeding as much as usual. but like i said im no biologist so i cant tell you exactly why.as far as the last picture, i would deff guess both of those deer to be 3 also. the one deer is closer to the camera, but its hard to tell how much closer. and it could be just that some deer are naturally bigger or smaller like people. just my 2 cents. Guest Broncho10
Re: NEW BUCK PICS I think that deer is probably 3 years old. Not quite enough tine length to be 4. I think that deer's leg will be just fine, he will, or has adapted to it being like that. As long as it doesn't have an infection, he will survive. If the injury was too bad you would see some type of deformity to one side of his rack. I don't think your deer look that bad. During the summer they do a lot of foraging on shrubbery and and other things in the woods that don't put much weight on them. Think about it, would you want a big layer of fat to insulate your body during the summer if you were a deer? Once it starts to cool down and the agriculture fields become prime they will begin to put on weight. I think the two deer are pretty close to the same size, the one is just closer to the camera making him look larger.
wtnhunt
Re: NEW BUCK PICS First buck is a 3.5 year old. He will be fine. How many bachelor groups a 350 acre piece of land can hold depends on factors like food sources and terrain. Is it a transition area where bucks overlap their terrirtories. A couple years ago on 60 acres just before season opened we had 3 or 4 different bachelor groups of 3-4 bucks visiting our plots and minerals. Dont remember exactly how many, but we had more than a dozen different bucks in the 2003 season get their pics made at our mineral site. We have not seen that much buck activity there since. Some does around here look a little thin, but some are still nursing. The heat does affect them. Have not seen any thin looking bucks, but then again we have not gotten any buck pics here lately. Stinger-Hunter
Re: NEW BUCK PICS wtnhunt is right about the bachelor groups, there is no way that these are the only bucks in the area. I've seen suburban areas with as many or more bucks as this. I'd guess that you have at least 10-20 bucks on that property.
Guest Defcon15
Re: NEW BUCK PICS With the bachelor groups, does anyone know if all the bigger guys group together and small guys have a separate group? Or do they mix and match?
