VTbowman
I bought my 50 cal. Remington 700ML about 6 years ago, roughly 2 years before the "150 grains of power" craze. At this time 90g to 100g was about the normal, and suggested, amount of powder to use. Then all the manufactures started making ML's to handle 150 grains of powder. I looked at my ML and a new Remington made last year, which is listed as being safe to use 150g, and I see absolutely no difference in design, barrel thickness, breech thickness, etc. I did not put a digital caliper on it but it looks to be the exact same gun design. However I can not get anyone to tell me if its safe to use 150 grains of pellets in my ML. I am not looking for a warentee, just a solid opinion from shooters who would know, if I am safe to shoot this charge. Can someone tell me if the design of the 700ML from 6 years ago is the same as one of today? Can it handle 150 grains of pellets? I am not stating I NEED 150 grains, I would just like to try it to see if I can get a better shot. I currenntly use 100g of Pyrodex pellets and a 240g sabot. I can get "ok" groups at 100 but I feel I could get better. Going lower in powder charge has not improved groupings at all so I'd like to try higher charge. Thanks in advance. too_pointer
Re: 100g vs 150g of pellets for my Remington. VT have you called Rem. on this ? Most likely they will cover their butts and tell you no, but maybe you will talk to someone who might give you his honest opinion. Ask them if there is any design difference from your gun to the newer ones. This would be my first choice ! too_pointer
VTbowman
Re: 100g vs 150g of pellets for my Remington. too_pointer- I did send Remington an email or something a few years back and like you guessed, they cover there ars by saying "Use only what your manual suggests"... But like I said. The design and spec's of my gun compared to one made last year are the exact same as far as I can see. I was unsure if Remington made the breech thicker or whatever on the ones they say can shoot 150g. It really does not look like they did. Triple 7- Ok so is three 50 grain Pyrodex pellets the same as 120 grain of black powder?
AJ
Re: 100g vs 150g of pellets for my Remington. I am not saying they can or can not handle it. I bought my Rem 700 ML in 1996 and it has digested nothing but 150 gr pellet loads of pyrodex. It has even digested 150 gr of 777 loose, it survived but it did not like it. One other tip, get a musket cap nipple. It is a whole bunch better than the #11 and gives better accuracy than the 209 primer.
VTbowman
Re: 100g vs 150g of pellets for my Remington. AJ- I had the musket caps, nipple, and conversion stuff for it one day before I realized it was an $70 upgrade. Nope to much for me at that time. Since I had the #11 caps in plenty I just plan to use them until gone. I must admit that I am not a big ML man. I do not even hunt it some years. Mostly due to being at my yearly tag out limit before the ML season hits. I do enjoy going and I can not wait to get one with it. Its still a virgin... AJ
Re: 100g vs 150g of pellets for my Remington. I didn't get a conversion kit, I just screwed in a musket cap nipple. It works fine. I don't recommend using #11 caps with 150 gr of powder. Not quite enough umph there to get reliable ignition all the time.
VTbowman
Re: 100g vs 150g of pellets for my Remington. The set I had was a new breech plug and nipple for the musket caps, a wrench that fit it and a pack of musket caps. At that time I did not see just a nipple that would screw into the factory breech plug for a musket cap size primer. I was shocked to see it rung up at $70! If I could get just the nipple I'd be fine.
VTbowman
Re: 100g vs 150g of pellets for my Remington. I just called the gun shop and he told me they DO have just a musket nipple that will screw right into a factory breech plug. I called him out on the suggestions from 3 years ago. He acted as if he would of never said such a thing... Oh well. Water under the bridge now.... I can get a musket nipple for $9 and I will be set. Thanks!
