Does anyone know anything about car sound systems?

Alright, I just installed a new Pioneer Head Unit in my Honda Civic. Its great and I love it. Its rated for 50w X 4. I'm going to get some 6 x 9 speakers for the back, Right now I have 5 1/4 180 watt Sony Xplod in the back. Once I get the 6x9's I'm going to move the 5 1/4 to the front. So my question is what should the RMS be on 6x9's so as to compliment the head unit? I'm just looking to get a decent sound system with a little bit of "punch" I have been checking speakers out and have found speakers with a RMS from 40 to 100 watts.

I hope I explained that well enough.... smirk.gif

the raido is 50 watts per channel ( 4 lines out ) rear left out and right out. frunt left out and right out. any 6x9 that can hold more than 50w will work.

i would go with the higher watts 6x9 and put a small 4 channel amp like a alpine 2532 or something like that. run it to the 6x8 and the 5 1/4 should sound good.

I agree with YB15. Id look into some decent subs. You can even get an 8" free air sub that would sound 100x better then a 6x9 for the same price. Anymore 10" are cheap too but I would understand if you werent trying to rock the neighborhood! You'd surprised what a quality 8" sub can do.

Re: Does anyone know anything about car sound systems?

I have two 12's Rockford Fosgates in my truck, It sounds like a small thunderstorm from far off lol. But my system is pricy is well.

I looked at Wal-Mart just a minute ago for ya. Average priced 6x9's were 20$ less than their 12' subs already in box. (BOXES ARE EXPENSIVE). The bad thing about 6x9's is that they aren't meant for bass. They are basically a big tweeter, or high pitch speaker. Yes they sound like they put off that low bass tone on LOW volumes, but if you turn it up half-way or much higher, they CRACK. And believe me it's a nsaty sound. I am not telling you how to build your system, but take it from a guy who went the 6x9 route once......your better off going with a sub of some kind.

Re: Does anyone know anything about car sound syst

Well say I went with the 8" or 10" sub, I would have to get a amp, right? Or would the Head unit be able to power it? Would the system sound alright with the 5 1/4's in the front and then the sub in the back?

This is the first time I have done any of this so exscuse my ignorance... tongue.gif

Also if you have any tips, feel free to throw them out there....

Re: Does anyone know anything about car sound syst

Well most Cd players have a built in amp in the in the form of bass boost or LOUD. It will sound decent with the 5 1/4's and a sub in back, but if you want BUMP, you need and exterior AMP.

Give me a price of what you wanna spend and I will come up with an idea for ya.

Re: Does anyone know anything about car sound syst

They are right. 10's these days are about like what the 12's used to sound like. I had 2 kicker Impulse 12's for years in my truck. They were running off 400 watts and it was plenty loud. Now that I have 2 kids and a wife I wanted my back seat back so I put in 2 Mempis DVC 10's running on about 225 watts. Still plenty lound and I can put six people in my truck.

Re: Does anyone know anything about car sound syst

I owned Mendon Car Audio before I was robbed blind my my partner so I know a thing or 2, lol.

You definately want to go with 12" subs, and a bridgable amp.......around 500 watts. Remember that 500 watts will NOT put 500 to each speaker. It's divided by the number of speakers and subs. you have.

Re: Does anyone know anything about car sound syst

I'm not really looking to rock the neighbohood here as I know that will break the bank. LOL. I just want somthing that sounds decent and has a lil punch but I'm on a budget of a MAX of $200, and if possible less. I spent almost half of that already, $35 on the xplod's and $50 on the HU. Heres what I have so far: Head Unit: Pioneer DEH 1600 50w X 4. I have the stock speakers that came in the car in the front and they are really bad. They are old and cracked. And in the back I have the Sony Xplod 5 1/4's. They sound alright but not much to them. Now I just bought them so I am still able to take them back if thats what you guys would suggest. Also the mounts in the car in both the front and back are 5 1/4's, so I will need boxes for the back.
