I really like the .243 wssm. While your looking at .243's, you might want to look at their short/ fat step-children. Funny lookin' but they seem to perform well.

Re: .270 or .243

if your just going to maybe hog and deer hunt and want a rifle to shoot that doesn't kick the heck out of you look at the 308 instead of a 20-06 or if you have a 30--06 and want to find a lot less kick then the 243 is ideal man

well worth the money and it is a nice shooter and very accurate. savage makes a great 243 and it shoots like you have a 22-250 in your hand

Re: .270 or .243

Nothing wrong with a .243 for deer hunting, thats what my wife hunts with and it is very effective and accurate. The .270 is a great round for deer too though and I am kind of partial to it since that what I have been hunting with for the past 10 years. Really the recoil on a .270 is not at all bad.

270 kicks noticeably less than a 30-06.

This is not exactly true. When both are fed the same weight bullets, the recoil is identical, or close enough that you can't tell them apart. Comparing a 130 gr in the .270 Win against a 165 gr in the .30-06 is noticably different.

Re: .270 or .243

I have the .270 and my father has the 06, both are Browning A-bolt Medallions. There is not much difference between the two in re-coil! If your looking for less re-coil. Then I would go with the .243, you might want to look into the new managed re-coil rounds from Remington. Would be a lot cheaper than a new gun.

Re: .270 or .243

For this scenario, yes it should work just fine since its for deer. When you suggested it for elk, no way would I agree with that. They use very light bullets (for the caliber) and have low sectional densities. This means they will not penetrate as well as a longer bullet of the same weight (assuming they are identical bullet types). Deer are not armor plated, and are fairly easy to bring down, when shot correctly. So yes, it would keep him from buying another gun, but where is the fun in that?
