plannerman
If you've already got the 30-06, I'd drop to the 243. Just my opinion.
Shaun_300
Re: .270 or .243 The .270 is the same shell as the .30-06, but just necked down to .27 caliber. If you want a difference and want to go to a smaller caliber bullet, I'd go with the .243. If you want the same caliber bullet in a lighter version of the .30-06, I'd choose the .308 Win. Guest ronin
Re: .270 or .243 I really like the .243 wssm. While your looking at .243's, you might want to look at their short/ fat step-children. Funny lookin' but they seem to perform well.
robk
Re: .270 or .243 if your just going to maybe hog and deer hunt and want a rifle to shoot that doesn't kick the heck out of you look at the 308 instead of a 20-06 or if you have a 30--06 and want to find a lot less kick then the 243 is ideal man well worth the money and it is a nice shooter and very accurate. savage makes a great 243 and it shoots like you have a 22-250 in your hand rob k
wtnhunt
Re: .270 or .243 Nothing wrong with a .243 for deer hunting, thats what my wife hunts with and it is very effective and accurate. The .270 is a great round for deer too though and I am kind of partial to it since that what I have been hunting with for the past 10 years. Really the recoil on a .270 is not at all bad. hutchies
Re: .270 or .243 Hey bud why don't you try some managed recoil .30--06 shells. They are made by Remington and supposed to have 1/2 the kick of the normal shell.
WaCoyote
Re: .270 or .243 270 kicks noticeably less than a 30-06. Just for giggles you should check out the 25-06. My next rifle is going to be the .270. I love that cartridge.
AJ
Re: .270 or .243 [ QUOTE ] 270 kicks noticeably less than a 30-06. [/ QUOTE ] This is not exactly true. When both are fed the same weight bullets, the recoil is identical, or close enough that you can't tell them apart. Comparing a 130 gr in the .270 Win against a 165 gr in the .30-06 is noticably different.
WaCoyote
Re: .270 or .243 Thats true. But I figured it kind of "goes without saying". The standard deer bullet weight for a .270 is 130 grns. I used 180's in the 06 but went 150 this year. Why do you always have to be so logical? You must be an accountant or something. LOL. johnf
Re: .270 or .243 I have a 25-06 & 243 and they are both very good deer rounds and have significantly less recoil than the 30-06. The 243 is also noticably less than the 25-06. If you want a good deer round with very little recoil, I'd go with the 243.
spyderpancake
Re: .270 or .243 If you don't like the recoil, i would use a .308, personal preference.
LifeNRA
Re: .270 or .243 I have the .270 and my father has the 06, both are Browning A-bolt Medallions. There is not much difference between the two in re-coil! If your looking for less re-coil. Then I would go with the .243, you might want to look into the new managed re-coil rounds from Remington. Would be a lot cheaper than a new gun.
bowtech
Re: .270 or .243 id go with the .243 it is a all around good gun .. it has some recoil but is farly flat shooting and has good knock down power
Missed160
Re: .270 or .243 243. Or go with something a little "different" loke the 7mm-08 or the new remington .240.

RangerClay
Re: .270 or .243 Based on what you asked I would go with a .243. You have tiny deer down there in Florida. Ranger
hutchies
Re: .270 or .243 AJ, Do you think this would be a good case for him to test out the Remington Managed recoil shells. I think this would solve his problem without having to buy another gun.
AJ
Re: .270 or .243 For this scenario, yes it should work just fine since its for deer. When you suggested it for elk, no way would I agree with that. They use very light bullets (for the caliber) and have low sectional densities. This means they will not penetrate as well as a longer bullet of the same weight (assuming they are identical bullet types). Deer are not armor plated, and are fairly easy to bring down, when shot correctly. So yes, it would keep him from buying another gun, but where is the fun in that?
