Opinions Please

Well, I was fixin' to hang a new stand today, but I realized that ALL my footpegs were in the back of my old truck which my ex got in the divorce. Well a month later she was in a wreck and the truck was totalled and the insurance company took it away with ALL my pegs in the back.

Now for the question.......should I get new footbegs, or should I get a good set of ladder sticks.......I'm leaning towards the sticks, but I have limited experience with them. Do any of you have any recommendations.

Re: Opinions Please

I'd get a ladder. I will try to never use tree steps again. I hate holding on and trying to screw them in and the ladders are much safer to me.

I don't think the brand matters all that much. I'm not even sure what brand the three I have are. I do buy ratchet straps to secure them to the tree.

Re: Opinions Please

i use both ladders and steps--they both have advantages. Some of the trees i hunt just aren't straight enough for ladders and I have to use steps. If I had my choice though I prefer the ladder--just a little safer and if you fall you don't have to worry about a tree step ripping your guts out.

Re: Opinions Please

I use a stick...cheapest on the market that I've found is a 20' stick made by strong built. I threw away the ropes it comes with and use rachet straps.

IMO...a stick ladder is much much safer to use! I know the steps are cheaper...but you won't regret buying a stick.

Climbing sticks. I made my own and I would not have anything else. I used climbing spurs for about 6 years but after a few close calls i gave that up. There all pretty good. buy the cheap ones and throw the straps away and get some ratchet straps and your done. grin.gif

Re: Opinions Please

Bro I have a ladder stick I bought from Walmart some years ago. Not sure which brand but they sell them still.

I love mine but not for hunting.

(Unless I can set it up weeks in advance.)

I still perfer screw in steps which also get set up weeks or months in advance.

What I do is use my stick ladder to install my pegs.

Mine has steps that are staggered or one on one side and one on the other only a foot higher. Not one piece going across the vertical strut (making a tee)

I install my pegs opposite of the step its next to and get the same spacing that way. I use a safety belt attached to the stick so I can go hands free if need be.

I also use a cordless drill to put a samller pilot hole for easier installation.

My stick came with ropes which I replace with motorcycle style tie downs.

Its a real pain to try and carry it in, set up, then set a stand, then hunt.

Just to much to carry IMHO.

But real good if set up in advance and you feel safe to leave it out. I feel they are hard to lock em up safe too. Unless you have 4 or 5 different locks and chain or whatever.

Oh I also got some of that tool handle dip from Home Depot and a cheap 2" paint bruch and coated mine. Looks like bark and is rubber coated so you cant bang them together. I used 1 14 oz can per section to make it real thick and "barky" looking.

Keeps the rust off too.

I used Black.

Just my 2 cents... LOL

Re: Opinions Please

Definitely the climbing sticks, however I cant say much about the screw in steps cuz Ive never used them. I just got me a 20' Tree snake made by Hunters View this year and they work GREAT. Easy to setup and they use the draw tight straps that crimp tight on the draw string. Not to mention they only cost me around $40
