Returning bowhunter

I'm getting back into bowhunting after over 20 years of NOT bowhunting. Alot has changed in regards to equipment. I am basically at the mercy of articles and recommendations in regards to the new things on the market.

On recommendation, I replaced my old PSE Laser II with a PSE Bruin. I also went with carbon arrows instead of aluminum, a whisker bisket rest, a kisser button and a release. All these things are new to me. My how technology moves forward!

I started shooting well immediately. Grouping well, so well that fletching is being damaged. I guess thats good and bad. wink.gif I'm pleased that I haven't forgotten everything over the years.

Anyway...my question is in regards to broadheads. I have been told that some of the more expensive seemingly top of the line broadheads are too heavy for the weight I shoot. I'm a small woman and at present I'm still breaking the muscles in at 38#. After I get broke in, I am sure I will max the weight out but my Bruin is only 30-40# range. Perhaps later on I will be ready to have the limbs switched out to go 40-50# but that will be tops and probably not until next year. So...my question is, for this weight, what broadheads would you guys and gals recommend? What pros and cons can you share with me?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Returning bowhunter

I think you should take your time easing back into the saddle and use what you feel comfortable with to start. Then work your way through the hype and decide what you would like to get out of your bowhunting equipment. Take an experienced friend along with you to a pro shop and talk with the guy behind the counter. Then check with your friend to see what he considers junk and treasure in what you are really looking for.

I would go with carbon arrows and 85 grain broadheads. Remember to match your field tips to the broadheads. Hope you get it right soon

Re: Returning bowhunter

Thanks for the input!

I did go to a pro shop to purchase my bow and have it set up. The man knows his stuff. He even had me practice with it in his backyard (runs business out of his home) to be sure it "felt" right.

So far, I'm impressed. I'm grouping well and will be able to max out the weight before season easily.

Nothing like a new bow and good grouping from the start to get one pumped up. wink.gif

I'm currently using carbon arrows...100's. A co-worker that is an avid bowhunter said that was a light arrow and should fly well as long as the broadheads are right.
