AJ Posted October 29, 2004 Report Share Posted October 29, 2004 I have used the standard speedloaders in the past but never really cared for them. I usually had one or two open in my pocket. Luckily, I used pellets, so it was not that big of a deal. This year I am using the Savage and smokeless powder. I thought about using the same speedloaders, but I wanted something different. Since I never really needed a fast second shot, I can take my time on the reload, so speed is not too important. I took some once fired .45-70 Govt cases and dumped my powder charge in them. It worked well, and left about 1/2" or so of space at the top. I tried some various caps I had laying around and did not like the fit, so taking a tip from Toby Bridges, I tried a foam roll-up earplug. I rolled it and stuck it in the case. They worked great. The cartridges look pretty cool with an orange bullet sticking out of them. I also tried some .338 Win Mag cases. They will also work just fine. I put some bullets in their sabots in a plastic tube with nylon caps and have a pill container with some primers. The setup works great. Basically the same size as a speed loader. They have a real tight snap on cap that is attached to the tube too. They will hold three 50 grain pellets and a sabot perfectly. I took the pocket pen clip off one of my AAA sized mini mag flash lights and use it on one of my pre-loads for a quick grab off the shirt pocket, and then set up 2 more for the inside the right hand coat pocket. I then took some those new M&M candy containers. The ones that are about 1"x3" in size and store extra pellets, caps, and sabots in the fanny pack. I also use those M&M containers and cotton balls for scent bombs... Doesn't take long to get the chocolate smell out of them when you pour in some Tinks 69!!! I seriously doubt if anyone (or very, very few) get 2nd shots with their muzzleloaders so speed is not much of an issue. I do like having the powder premeasured so I don't have to mess with it in the field. My knight speedloaders have the knight emblem printed on one end of them so I always put the sabot/bullet in that end so I know where it is. I suppose if there is no marker you could always use a permanent marker to identify what is in which end of the loader. Good luck all. Muzzleloader is over here tomorrow. 1 buck down, 1 doe to go. I have no financial interest in either of the vendors I posted. I like to weigh out 20-30 charges at once, so I like to have many vials. Currently, I have two different powders with about six different weights ready to hit the range (about 60 charges). Also, I want an airtight container. When one looks at what you have invested in the gun, scope, powder, etc., I think these vials are affordable. Especially since they are reuseable, JMOT. When they were at 25 yards I shot the first one. The other two were startled but didn't know what happened, and watched as the doe that whas shot went down within 30 yards. While this was going on I reloaded as quickly and quietly as I could, then shot the second doe. The third doe was still clueless and I probably could have taken her as well if I would have had a third tag. But he didn't check the ballistics carefully enough and was shooting about 8 inches high at 100 yards. He had a buck come in at 125 yards. He held aboout 10 about the back and pulled the trigger. The deer just stood there and then went back to feeding. He reloaded and now the deer was at 100 yards. He held on the spine and shot. Again the deer just shood there. He quicly tried to reload again. The deer moved into a small woodlot. After 5 minutes the deer came back out of the wood lot at about 125 yards. This time he decided to aim dead on and took the buck through both lungs. So it does happen where you get multiple shots. But hopefully it won't be needed. I had 3 of them loose the earplug stopper and spill a bunch of powder in my pocket. Oh well, I will try the .338 Win Mag cases as the bottleneck design should hold the earplug better. I was walking down a waterway between two standing corn fields when two deer came running around the corner, straight up the waterway at me. When I threw up the gun, they froze. At the shot, the doe buckles. I knelt down in the tall grass reloading while the other deer (fawn?) stood there. I got reloaded and even scoped the other deer out. Deciding not to shoot it, I stood up and started walking towards the downed deer. As I got to it, something made me turn around and look back up the waterway that I just walked down. A doe and twins had come out of the corn and were standing there looking at me. Down goes the doe! Last day of season, I watched two deer enter the trees around a silted in pond. Figuring they were going to bed and not offer a shot, I decided to walk over there. One of them took off across the open field and stopped broadside. I shot it, reloaded and as I walked towards it, the other deer it was with took off runing and stopped broadside at 60 yards. I was out of tags I carry four reloads (powder, bullets/sabots, 209 primers) in a ziplock baggie. Figure this should help if I get caught in the rain. horst Posted November 10, 2004 Report Share Posted November 10, 2004 Re: Extra Load Carriers AJ, a lotta drill bits come in little plastic tubes with red rubber caps on the ends of them, these work great and the caps hardly ever come off of them, they stretch over the end pretty snugly.Also when you get up into the bigger bit sizes the same tubes will hold your bullets as well.Im not saying to go buy new drill bits just for the tubes but if you know anyone who does a lotta cement work or construction it never hurts to ask em to save the tubes for you, I thnk its mostly masonary bits these come in but Ive seen other companies that use them to. The neck and sharp shoulders hold the earplug well. I put them in a little nylon ammo pouch and it keeps them secure in my pocket. I have been storing my bullets in the tubes the bronze bore brushes come in. That works great. I can put 3 bullets with sabots in them and they also have the red cap. Works great. I just throw three or four into my coat pocket and go. I usually throw a few bullets in the same pocket as well. Works good and is simple. My wife is a professional photographer so I have an endless supply of them, also work great for scent canisters with a saturated cotton ball.
