Re: Firearm of choice for Bushy tails

I like to hunt with a .22 but kill far fewer. I usually do a lot of still hunting and I wait until several are out, then I lower the boom.

Because of that I use my Mossberg 500, 12ga with a light load like a 7 1/2. A lot of people use a 6 but I take distant shots and aim just a little in front of the head. Dead bushy tail with just a few pellets. The main reason I use the 12ga is because once they come out I can take two or three shots much faster then I could trying to bean one with my .22.

Marlin 917V .17HMR! Best squirrel gun out there! Head shots are easy as icing out to 100 yards. Doesn't mess up any meat, don't have to dig pellets out them, and is just plain fun! It is so much more fun to pick one off at 75 yards than to point at em and blast em with a shotgun(i'm not blasting shotgun users, you just don't know any better grin.gif) I limited out for the first time last year (12 squirrels) with less than 30 shots shocked.gif

I deffinatley use a scoped .22lr. I don't really like shotguns because I don't like how loud they are. They spook too many squirrels in the vecinity of the one that was just shot. Plus it is a lot more challenging, and that is what makes it really fun.

However I do carry the shotgun out during late season when the snow is on the ground and I get bored enough to go freeze my butt off. LOL.

I use three rifles for hunting Squirrels: (1) CZ-452 AMERICAN in .22 LR with 4-power Weaver rimfire scope. (2) My Kimber M-82 in .22 Hornet (Handloaded down) with Weaver 3-9 power scope. (3) My Winchester Model 43 in .25-20 with 4-power Weaver Scope. This is a GREAT Rifle and the factory loads are even nondestructive! I also use my Stoeger Model "Uplander" in .410 3" shells loaded with #5 shot. grin.gif

22 mag soild points. Like siad before head shot. No pellets to pick out.

Anyone thought of using a 32 Cal. Black powder. I thought of buying one just for that purpose.

I use to own a T/C Cherokee Rifle in .32 and also had a .45 caliber barrel for it. I used the .32 a couple of season for Squirrels and it was more challanging then using a modern firearm. I used 18 grains of Pyrodex-P and a 43 grain round patched ball and a CCI cap for firing it. It was very accurate but the only drawback was the slow reloading. I did manage to bag several Squirrels with it in the years I owned the rifle. grin.gif

I like using a .22 lr with a scope. I have also used my 12 gauge, but the .22 is easier on your shoulder and ears, plus less wasted meat. I used a co-worker's .17 hmr last season. It has a longer range, but it's also louder and did more damage. The damage may have been due to the loads he gave me. They weren't made for squirrels. All-in-all, my weapon of choice is a .22.

Re: Firearm of choice for Bushy tails

Here on Long Island it's illegal to hunt with any kind of rifle so it's shotgun only. I use my 12 gauge most of the time, but I also like to use my pump action .410 shotgun from time to time. I limit my shots to clear up close shots and it works well, plus it doesn't damages less meat than the 12 gauge.

Re: Firearm of choice for Bushy tails

i only use a Ruger 10/22 with the bull barrel and synthetic target stock.. a nice 3X9 scope to top it off with and plain old winchester 22s shoot the best out of it.. groups the size of a dime at 50 yards when im shooting good..

i prefer to stalk , but i will sit in a good spot with full camo if i find a nut tree they are using a lot..

Shoot Strong
