WaCoyote
Was talking with my taxidermist about Bobcats and he said that when selling the hides there may be a different method for skinning than you would use on yotes but he wasn't sure. Can anybody clue me in? Season starts in about a week and we're gonna chase them hard this year. But we don't want to mess them up either by doing something stupid. Any reading material that you know of or just experience that you have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
sureshot
Re: Bobcat skinning question. I know my fur buyer likes them wiht the claws intact, he is able to sell them to people who like them tanned instead of just for the fur trade, really opens up the amount of peopel who is interested and in order the price per pelt!He likes them open cased and he does not liek them streeched to much like most do for coyotes, it opens the fur up to much any damage is seen way easier,[i never strech my shot coyotes to far, i would rather get a smaller size with no damage spotted than getting a section III damaged coyote]most try to strech to get a XL but a less streched coyote looks way fuller,Also he likes you to strech the legs out with a dowell and open the claws and strech them on a small piece of wood, they also scrape different than a coyote,he says that over scraping is easy to get and will get fur slippage which is easy to see with the translucent for of the cat especially near the front legs on the belly! Also try to get a strecher size especially for cats, he has special strechers for cats[sizes] I do not have them off hand but could prob get them in a couple weeks if you want, I have to stop out there and check up on the upcoming season after he is done harvest! I have also heard that they do not turn as easy as a yote, what he does is uses a air blower on the strechers so he does not have to turn them, I wish I could help more, this is just what I have heard from him over his many years as a buyer and skinner,I personally have not shot a cat couse I will not let a coyote go if it comes in with the small chance a cat will come in lol, one of these years I will get one!Good luck and if you want the strecher dimentions he uses pm me I will get them to you!! Guest ronin
Re: Bobcat skinning question. Try to skin them heads and claws on. The hide is easy but the paws and head can be tricky. Take your time and use a small exacto knife around the claws. Make sure that you remove as much meat from the pads as you possibly can. If your tanning, you can always work on it in stages during the pickling process.
